Description:

For this swap, you will take one manila file folder (recycled or new) and turn it into a mail art envelope. Decorate the front and backside of the folder using collage/mixed-media techniques. When you are done, tuck in some collage and/or mail art goodies you think your partner might enjoy ~ flat items such as interesting papers, ephemera, images, labels, stickers, postcards, paper napkins, etc. A note telling your partner what went in to creating your mail art envelope would be nice, too.

There's a great video by artist Roben-Marie Smith that shows her process in creating a file folder mail art envelope: here. You can find more inspiring examples in her Flickr stream: here.

Notes

  • You may cut the file folder down in size if you wish (no smaller than 6"x9" though), however do not cut off the tab.
  • Envelope art theme is sender's choice.
  • You do not have to machine stitch the edges closed like Roben-Marie does in the linked video or examples. Taping, gluing, or other tried-and-true methods of envelope sealing are welcome.
