Swap description

What are the images which stick in your memory from the tale of Rumpelstiltskin?
What was the real Rumpelstiltskin like?
Do you ever wonder how the story might read if told from a different perspective, or with a different ending?

For this swap, Rumpelstiltskin is your source of inspiration, and you will create for each of your partners any ONE of the following:

  • a handmade postcard
  • 2 ATCs
  • a mini-zine
  • a story or other piece of prose
  • a handcrafted 'artefact' based on the tale (see Swap requirements below for suggestions)

How you interpret the story is entirely up to you, and - like the original fairy tales - can be as dark as you like. You could illustrate scenes from the traditional tale, re-write as a comic strip, re-tell the story as it might have been in an alternative period or context, or re-imagine in any other way that inspires you.

Optional extra

Send a scan of your finished items (or Flickr link or text file, depending on your item) to me (as well as your partners!) and I will create a zine from all contributions. I will send everybody who sends me a copy of their work a copy of the finished zine.
Disclaimer: The finished zine may be in print or PDF format – this will depend on how many people take part!

Swap requirements

  • No recent/unexplained 1 or 3 ratings, and no late swaps on dashboard as of sign-up date.
  • 2 partners = 2 Rumpelstiltskin items sent & 2 Rumpelstiltskin items received (see Swap description above for notes on what constitutes a single item)
  • Handmade postcards and ATCs may be made using any digital, hand-drawn, hand-painted or hand-crafted media but NO sticker-slapping!
  • A standard mini-zine template is available here but any alternative format/layout/binding of equivalent content length is fine. Content may be hand-drawn/handwritten/typed/word-processed/cut-paste-&-photocopied, as preferred.
  • Stories/prose should be min. 500 words, and typed/word-processed/legibly hand-written.
  • Other 'artefact' could be anything from a mini stuffie of one of the characters, to a skein of hand-spun 'gold' thread, or a set of commemorative faux postage – whatever suits your own set of skills! Include a product label or note to explain the relevance/provenance of your item.
  • Send on time!

Instead of creative non-fiction or interpretive art, would it be acceptable to write a non-fiction essay on the themes of this fairy tale and their place in world mythology?

"a story or other piece of prose" - anything goes. :) So long as Rumpelstiltskin is clearly the inspiration for the piece (not just a passing mention or sidenote) then any prose relating to Rumpelstiltskin is acceptable.

I marked the swap sent last week, but gave the packages to someone else to be mailed and they weren't sent out till yesterday - I altered my send date to reflect the day they really were mailed!
