Swap description: Twice Upon a Time

Think of a well-known fairy tale. Now step into one of the characters' shoes (this can be a minor, crowd-scene character, or one of the main protagonists). What secret thoughts did they have as they watched the main story unfold? How did their actions (previously unrecorded) impact on the story as we know it? Or maybe the real story began where the tale we are familiar with left off – what happened in the untold sequel? What was the story that Grimm or Andersen or Perrault chose to overlook?

Alternatively, imagine how a traditional fairy tale would have played out in a different era, or with different cultural references, or switching genders. Play with the reader's expectations! And remember that the original fairy tales are often quite dark so don't be afraid to explore the darker – or lighter – side of your chosen subject!

Write down your re-imagined tale. Feel free to include some kind of visual 'accessories' to your story, in the form of illustrations, extra items (relevant to the story) etc, but this is not a requirement – the swap is for the story only.

If you aren't sure what counts as a fairy tale, Sur La Lune Fairy Tales is a great site for inspiration and reference.

Swap requirements

  • No recent/unexplained 1 or 3 ratings, and no late swaps on dashboard as of sign-up date.
  • 3 partners = 3 copies of your story sent & 3 different stories received
  • Stories must be a minimum of 500 words
  • Stories can be presented however you like – typed out on copier paper, bound as a zine, or written in the form of journal entries or letters, etc. Stories can be handwritten or printed (but as you have 3 partners, printing might be the more practical option!).
  • Please include a weblink to or brief written summary of the original fairy tale that you have adapted, in case your partner isn't as familiar with it as you are. This can be a separate note, or presented as an introduction or footnote alongside your re-telling.
  • Feel free to list some of your favourite fairy tales in the swap comments below or on your profile. The swap is entirely sender's choice but you never know, one of your own favourite stories might inspire your partner. :)
  • Send on time!

At the moment, I'm especially interested in Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, and the Pied Piper - mostly Grimm tales, I guess. But my favourites change all the time, so whatever inspires you is fine with me! :)

I already have some fairy tale adaptations written-- it's one of my favorite sources of inspiration! Can't wait to come up with a new one for this swap :)

Excellent :-)

I really like Thumbelina, the Little Mermaid, Princess and the Pea, Rapunzel and Beauty and the Beast (one of my books is an adaptation of this - Beauty by Robin Mckinley, I recommend it!)

But all fairy tales are welcome :)

I think reading Beauty by Robin McKinley when I was a teenager is what first turned me onto revised fairy tales. :) Haven't read it for years, now; but have read many more great & not-so-great adaptations since. Maybe we need to do a swap to recommend our favourite ft adaptations...

Officially signed up instead of watching, now that I'm writing the beginnings of my fractured fairy tale... Any maximum word length? I will have no problem getting above 500, but might have a problem staying below 7,000 ;)

No, I'll just stick with a minimum requirement & leave the rest to you & your conscience! ;)
