Description:

I am not Chinese, but I love the Chinese tradition of the Red Envelopes.

Here is a little something about it I found on Wikipeda, in case you did not know.

~Usage~ Red envelopes are often presented at social and family gatherings such as Chinese weddings or on holidays such as Chinese New Year. The red color of the envelope symbolizes good luck. The money amount contained usually begins with an even digit, as odd numbered money gifts are associated with funerals. At weddings, the amount offered is usually intended to cover the cost of the attendees as well as help the newly married couple. During Chinese New Year, red envelopes are typically given to the unmarried by the married, regardless of age.

SO HERE IS THE DEAL: You will have 3 partners. For each of the partners you will make or purchase a Chinese red Envelope. Inside the envelope you will place a letter, poem, picture, or some sort of treat you think that your partner will like. (Check out your partner's profile for ideas). Send extra goodies, for hearts. Place all of this in an envelope and send it out to your partners.

THE FINE PRINT!!! Sorry, but no newbies on this one. Profiles with a rating of 4.8 or higher only. this is an International swap. No no-sends, I will ban if I think you will flake.

Have fun with this swap

You can find the red envelopes in chinese stores or online (e.g ebay). Theres loads of different designs, even cute ones like Hello kitty and Disney.

What a great swap idea!

If you guys have trouble finding the envelopes & don't want to order on-line, check out your local Asian grocery market (assuming you have one!). The one in Oklahoma City stocks wonderful stationery and gift items.

i found some on ebay and they are cute!! and will definitely be in in time for swap

I thought they are called "red packets" ~.~

Well, it is just the right time to get them as Chinese New Year is just around the corner!

Now, there are red packets that have many cartoon images. However, I love the traditional red packets more =)

Joined this swap! Happy Chinese New Year!

wow! i am chinese (grew up in china for most of my childhood) & yet i did not know all this info about my own tradition! shame shame. thanks for educating me! ;)

Wow, what a reponse to this swap. I just added it this morning and already 12 of you joined. Thank you!!!! Ok to clarify a bit. It does have to be a red envelope, it has to be decorated in a chinese style. You can send cartoonie ones if your partner does not mind (Check with them first). And yes, they are also called red packets. If you have any other questians please let me know. (P.s. I found a pack of 5 chinese red envelopes at Peir One Imports store, but that was around Christmas.) Remember, if you can't find any you like, try making one out of red paper and Chinese pictures. Have fun with this.

i got a pack of five on ebay for 2.50 USD total including shipping, so they are cheap!!

Oh! I'm soooo in! Chinese New Year (CNY) is this coming 7th February and we celebrate for 15 days straight (till 21st Feb). Chinese celebrate CNY based on the chinese lunar calender to welcome the spring.

Everything red symbolised prosperity so you'll find most chinese wearing red especially on the first day of CNY. Red packets will be given by the married couples to the singles (like me!), irregardless of age!

You'll get to see dragon dance and fire crackers too (notice they are red too). Families meet up during the CNY eve to have reunion dinner.

I'm happy PhantomBeauty has intiated this unique swap. I've lots of "Red" prosperity to give away! Happy CNY!
