A story sack is a collection of props that go alongside a children's picture book. They are popular in the UK in nurseries and schools as they help to make reading books more fun and engaging. The idea of the sack is that as you read a book with your child you will pull out various objects, pictures etc to bring the story to life. You can buy them ready made but they are expensive. Here is a link to get an idea of what these ready made story sacks look like: http://www.storysack.com/ The idea of this swap is that we will each make 3 story sacks based on a picture book of our choice. 2 sacks will be sent to our swap partners and one will be kept to use with our own children/grandchildren etc. When the swap is complete we will each have some lovely resources to use at home to help promote reading. Here is an example of what I would include in a sack based on The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle: 1. A small copy of the book The Hungry caterpillar 2. A soft toy Caterpillar either bought or handmade. 3. A little book about caterpillers and butterflies (non fiction) this coud be handmade by printing pictures and facts from the Internet. 4. Some soft play food like the ones the caterpillar eats in the book. 5. A picture of the moon 6. A picture of a leaf 7. A Toy butterfly, either bought or handmade. 8. A cd of songs such as "food glorious food" and "truly scrumptious". The sack itself is usually a drawstring bag but it doesn't really matter as long as it can be kept altogether so a ziplock pouch, cardboard box etc would be just fine too. If you decide to join the please write down which book you will do so we don't get duplicates! I'm not putting a spending guideline as it will vary depending on how much is handmade or bought. Shipping might be quite costly though so if this is a problem then please don't sign up. Happy swapping! |
