Description:

I love using boxes in my art dolls. It is fun to create a scene within the box to tell a story within the doll, or to have a secret compartment to tuck in tiny treasures.

For this swap, we will create one wonderful art doll for our partner, incorporating a box somehow. This can be an altoid tin, a cigar box, a paper mache box, whatever you are inspired by. If you recycle a cardboard box (like a tea or splenda box) please reinforce the structure so it is sturdy. Boxes come in shapes other than square and rectangular, so don't feel bound by shape: valentines candy boxes, paper mache coffins, round and ovals, and yes... matchbox shrine dolls would fall into this category!

The box can be the base or actually part of the doll. You can create a diorama in the box or make a secret compartment-if you use that idea, please add some special treasures for your partner.

Please make your doll at least 4" tall.

No paper dolls, dotees, or plushie, please.

Having glimpsed a bit of ''Dracula's Ball'' I just had to sign up : )

If the doll must be at least 4", then how would we incorporate that if we chose an altoid tin or a smaller box? Unless we made a doll and used the box as something that stood next to it?

An altoid tin, even a mini one, would create a 4" doll with a head and legs. A mini altoid tin is 2 1/4" long, add an inch for a head and an inch + for legs or base, and it is easily over 4." Same thing if you use the tin as the head-it will end up over 4", if you construct it that way.

It's all in how you choose to construct it!

As long as the box obviously belongs with the doll, I am fine with it being a separate component.

Even if you used a mini altoid tin sideways, it could make a 4" doll. I just laid out materials to see if I could do it, and was able to estimate dolls from 4" up to about 8."

Does that help?

coffin box skirt base+doll torso+doll head=total doll height

Thought maybe a pic of the entire doll would help explain it : )

OMG, I had the wrong idea completely and misunderstood this! I thought we had to make a box, plus a doll to go inside it. Sorry, I'm way off, lol! Thanks for the explanation!

Well, you could do that too.... it just wouldn't work with a mini altoid tin, as you pointed out! Sorry for the confusion. o_0

Here is another box doll-one of my first ones and still a favorite, even though the hands are awful:
