Description:

Many of us know babies, have babies on the way, or know a child who would just love a soft blankie in sweet colors (my own 7-year-old, a big girl in many ways, would cherish such a blanket!). In this swap, we will exchange small granny squares. Our goal is to collect enough squares for a lovely baby afghan at the end of the four-part swap cycle.

WHAT: This swap is the first part of the cycle. For this part, you will crochet a total of 12 4x4 inch granny squares in soft, machine-washable yarn, in 3 or 4 ply, and pastel colors. You will have two partners, and send each partner six of the squares. In turn, on this round, you will receive a total of 12 squares from two partners.

WHO: This swap is international, for anyone who has a rating of 4.5 or better or is a newbie with a nice full profile, and would enjoy making a joint-effort baby afghan! Please join!

I'm assigning two partners because the small squares work up very quickly. Each granny will probably be something like four or five granny rounds to achieve a 4x4 square (depending on yarn and needle of your preference, of course).

You can also get started on your squares right away, before partners are assigned, because we already know that all squares will be done in pastels. Do try to be pretty good about the sizing, so that all squares will fit nicely together at the end!

There will be three more Baby Granny Swaps in succession, at the end of which you will have 48 little pastel granny squares for an interesting and pretty blanket for a lucky baby or child.

And one last detail: I will be jumping in to angel anyone who doesn't receive a set of grannies for any part of this swap. But I think everyone will be nice and send their grannies!

p.s. This swap was inspired by the super-fun "Earth Tone Granny Swap" cycle that's going on right now.

I am SO in!!!! What weight of yarn will we all be using? 2 ply? 3? sport? fingering? It would be nice to be all the same weight I think.

leahsimone 04/12/2008 #

Hi! Yes, I agree, let's try to use the same weight. I've been making my friend a baby granny afghan with Plymouth Jeannee. It's actually 4-ply worsted weight, but it's a great cotton-acrylic blend that is sooo soft and light. Hmmm...let's give it a little thought.

Hi, folks--we've had a request to open this up to international swappers. What do you all think? I'm game, but only if we have a total consensus--otherwise, I'll do a future swap for international.

dandelionmom 04/15/2008 #

I'm good international. If you go with a 4 ply I will need to drop though- my stash of pastels is all 2 and 3!--4 would make a nice blankie-I just want to use up some stash!

leahsimone 04/15/2008 #

Hi! Definitely go with what you've got in your stash--it'll be better for a baby blanket anyway! Okay, let's wait to hear what other folks say about the international.

Zipp0099 04/16/2008 #

I do not mind the international part at all. Just let me know what ply you are using so I know if I have to purchase some yarn. Ok, I want to purchase some yarn and I am using this swap for an excuse!! LOL

I'm joining. :D The Lion Brand Pound Of Love is awesome stuff. :D And international is ok since the squares are small.

rekesha 04/16/2008 #

Internal swappers are okay with me. I just want to know what ply we are using so I can get started on the squares. :-)

leahsimone 04/16/2008 #

What do you think about using either 3 or 4-ply yarn interchangeably for this, as long as the squares are a true 4x4 inches? I only say this because, for instance, Pound of Love is 4-ply (I believe) and the yarn I love, Plymouth Jeannee is 4 ply, but others have 3-ply in their stash. Weigh in on this pressing question? Then we can all get to crocheting!

jessica 04/17/2008 #

Well pound of love is 4ply but feels 3 ply. Also for those who want to you add a 1/2 cup white vinegar to the wash & it softens yarn right up. No after smell either. :D The last blanket I did that too made it feel like I used Simply Soft, when I used red heart one pounder. But if we have to use 3 ply I will have to drop. I cannot crochet with that stuff if my life depended on it.

my vote is we use either 3 or 4 ply yarn as long as the squares are sam size. also international is fine with me

leahsimone 04/18/2008 #

Okay--international swap, using either 3 or 4-ply! That way no one gets left out.

Mine are done. You can see them: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sapphirefire2003/2429233336/ I made a set for each partner.
