Description:

I haven't seen the altered text ATC swaps for a while, so I'm starting them up again.....I'm going to do 9 swaps of different colors. For those of us who save our ATC's in 9 slot card holders in notebooks, this will look good to have a whole page of altered text ATC's.

What is an altered text ATC? You can google "altered text ATC" and look at the many images that show up. It's quite simple and can be fun trying to come up with a sentence or two that makes sense!!! Not all will make sense though....

Here are the rules:

Make a standard size ATC and use an actual book page as your backgound.

Attach a sturdy piece of cardboard on the back for stability.

It's nice to finish the back of the ATC with a piece of nice paper. Don't forget to put your swap info on the back.

Outline your phrase, sentence, etc. as the sample picture suggests.

After outlining your words, then cover the rest of the ATC with the color RED using the medium of your choice...can be inks, paints, markers, etc.

You can finish it using embellishments of your choice or leave it plain (your choice).

You must have a 4.8 or above rating....You must have 10 recently completed and rated swaps....No 1's or 3's in the last 3 months....

NO Flakers and be sure to get your swaps out on time! Please don’t sign up if you can’t meet the qualifications and the deadlines…

Have fun and happy swapping!

This looks really interesting! How do you keep the words you want to SHOW clear of the red ink/paint, etc.? One more question: the uncolored words are supposed to create a sentence--is that correct?

Thanks for any help.

OK...I think I get it. You draw around the words and just paint outside the drawn lines.

Would it be fine to use a carbon copy of an actual book page if one doesn't want to destroy a book?

A neat way to keep the words clear of paint is to cut little bits of scotch tape to go over the words you want to keep. The tape will repel the paint and you can wipe it off with a piece of paper towel. The goal is to make a sentence but they can be short or long sentences. I've seen simple ones like "I love spring" You can also embellish around the words with glitter, brads, buttons, ribbon, etc of the same color to make the card more interesting. In the last series of altered text atcs I did it was required to use real book pages. You can find some cheap books at library book sales and yard sales for about 25 cents. I look for really old, damaged books at the library. Then I know they have been read and enjoyed lots of times. And making art from them is like giving the book a memorial. As far as the colors of that series went we had your standard rainbow colors with the addition of pink, silver, black, and brown. Although, I'm not sure what colors this one will cover.

@user2637 - I have myself a book translated so badly into English that the best that can happen to it is being cut up for ATCs. I was wondering whether using copies would be fine, if some people don't have such books and feel strongly about cutting up an actual book (as I do, really - just for this one book it is a mercy).

Oh, I see we don't have answer from the host yet. :) In an altered ATC swap I did part, in turn (ages ago), copies were allowed. We don't have yard sales in this country, neither have I heard of library sales... and we don't use cents. :P

Another point, this swap is international, I see. Do the book pages have to be in English?

barbieloufromKY 05/15/2013 #

Okay let me try to answer some questions....

YES...use a real book not a copy....Old books can be found in thrift shops, goodwill stores, etc. for a very cheap price and the pages can be used many times for projects.... Book page can be written in any language....No need to supply a translation....

@davisbabe Your comment is about sums it up....Thanks!!

I hope this helps those who are asking questions and you decide to join the swap!
