TPD: Journal with Greeting Card Cover

A few weeks ago there was a new swap titled "journal in a notecard" in the public swaps. I looked at that title and thought how great a nice greeting card would be for a little purse-journal cover and that it would be pretty easy to sew or staple signatures into a folded greeting card, and you'd have the envelope that it would fit in perfectly, etc, etc, etc.

After I stopped imagining all this, I looked at the swap and found that the hostess had set up a swap for people to write journal prompts in a greeting card and send that to their swap partner...As one who likes to make things, I was a little disappointed, but then figured that I would create the swap I had imagined...

So, for this swap you will purchase a pretty or inspirational or funny or profile-based blank-inside greeting card and create one or more 4 - 6 page signatures and sew or staple or punch holes & tie ribbon/yarn to affix them to the inside of the card. This will make a nice little journal for your partner.

Please enclose the journal and envelope inside a larger envelope to send to your partner. That way your partner can use the envelope that came with the card as an extra protector if it is to be carried in a purse that is as messy as mine.

Take a look at your partner's profile and don't choose any type of greeting card that s/he would not like--if your partner hates rainbows, unicorns & glitter, find something else...

So, to recap:

1. Find & purchase a nice greeting card that is blank inside (outside message is fine, you can also cover an inside message if the otherwise-perfect card has one)

2. Make 1 or more 4 - 6 page signatures and attach them to the inside of the card

3. Send the card journal and envelope that came with the card in a larger envelope to your partner.

I have been asked what a "signature" is--we're not making autograph books here--sorry that I did not clarify that above. In bookbinding, a signature is a set of pages, folded in half and nested together, usually sewn into the binding along the fold. If you have an older book and look at it from the top, at the spine, you will likely see several separate sections that are stitched in. At the centermost 2-page spread of a sewn signature, you can see the thread that holds it together.

If the idea of sewing in signatures is daunting, it's fine to staple them in or punch holes and use ribbon or yarn to attach them to the outer card cover.
