Description:

For those of you who have a list of crafts and hobbies you've always wanted to try. Here's what you do.

Make a list of ten projects you're interested in trying and post them in the comments section. ie Pysanky eggs, polymer clay canes, quilting, etc. Your partner will pick one of your projects and put together a crafting kit for you. The kit will include materials and tools specific to the craft. Keep the list to crafts that can be completed without heavy machinery, unless you already own the machine. Not many can afford to mail a welding machine or sewing machine! Because of the variety of crafts that will be picked, I'll leave out the monetary amount. The tools can be gently used (like an extra crochet needle) but the materials should be new. Please put together a package that will make your partner smile.

Because I would like everyone to get the very best package, without fear of postage, this is a US only swap. Feel free to copy this for an international swap. Newbies are welcome, but need to fill out their profile and have a legit webpage or e-mail. Those with low ratings (less than 4) or a history of no sends will be taken on a case by case basis.

Have fun!

Update March 7th : I forgot to include the most obvious requirement.... Directions. These can be hand written, typed, or a book (if you're nice).

I have a question - What if everything on our swap-partner's list are things that would be on my list? - I mean, since joining swap-bot, I've discovered some new things that I'd love to learn, and those are already on the lists given - what if none of these things are "old" to us that we could teach another person?
just wondering... MaryB

Craftycakes 03/ 7/2007 #

Good question Mary B. I guess you could view it as an extra challenge. One of the best ways to learn about something is to try and teach it. And this way, you will be learning two new crafts(unless your partner picks the same one.)

I'm relatively new to swapping and crafting, so I figure most of the things on my partner's list will be either vaguely familiar or completely alien to me, so we're in the same boat.

Hey there! What a great swap. Here's my list:

needle felting polymer clay

Lunaria 03/ 7/2007 #
  1. wire work
  2. card making and other papercrafts
  3. Knitted dishcloths
  4. Jewelry making

Can't think of any more right now!

user5618 03/ 8/2007 #

Ok, I have no idea what happened with my list above, but I was so not done. Let me try this again.

  1. needle felting
  2. polymer clay (I think I'm the last living soul to have never even touched polymer clay), or any clay
  3. how to make a purse or tote bag (I have a sewing machine, but I'm scared of it. This might help me with my sewing machine anxiety)
  4. porcelain jewelry (don't know if you use major equipment)
  5. screen printing (mini version)
  6. mosaics (glass, tile, or paper)
  7. making coasters or jewelry with glass and copper tape (I can get a soldering iron if I need one)
  8. making lip balm
  9. how to sew a cute Christmas stocking
  10. wax painting

Just message me if your talents lie elsewhere. There are many, many things I would like to learn. My list could go on for days!

Ohhhhh this sounds like so much fun! I can't wait to find my partner out, I am hoping that what they want to learn is something I do too and I will make myself the same package, we can learn together! Or if they want to learn looming I know that well. Ohhhhh and there is the whole I am a florist thing so I could teach that (and actually have) But as for the things I would like to learn 1 Pysanky eggs (thanks for such a cool idea) 2 Paper making 3 I don't know what it is called but I saw one in somebody's profile it was woven magazine pages that they then made into a pocketbook, easily one of the coolest things I have ever seen! 4 Making soap 5 Making lip balm 6 Making knitting needles out of dowels 7 Interesting paper crafts like making a chip bowl or something like that 8 Hand spinning yarn with the small thing you hold 9 Fairy doors 10 Altered books

Thank you to everyone whose ideas I copied! I couldn't think of that many but they all look like so much fun!

user960 03/13/2007 #

Joy, I love your description of spinning: "hand spinning yarn with the small thing you hold." The small thing's called a drop spindle, and that's the cutest way I've ever seen it described. ;) Aww, the small thing you hold ... :D

Aerochik 03/14/2007 #

This is tough, but these are a few of the things I learned about on swap bot that I would like to learn more about:

1)screen printing (mini version) 2)needle felting 3)Fairy doors 4)Altered books 5)Jewelry making 6)making ATCs 7)tiny seed bead art/jewelry/etc

Thanks

alwaysjoy 03/16/2007 #

Thanks JeweledClaws, I just was trying to make sure that whoever got me didn't think I wanted a spinning wheel!

artgeek 03/18/2007 #

It was hard to think of ten things, so I hope I didn't pick anything too obscure or complicated:

  • screen printing (read about it online, but have not tried)
  • print making (I have some bits of linoleum, but no tools and haven't done anything along these lines before)
  • stamp making (read about it online, but have not tried)
  • any sort of nifty recycling project using common household finds
  • Huck embroidery (I've looked for info, but have never tried it)
  • applique (I'm a decent embroiderer, but this escapes me)
  • bookmaking (I'm a complete novice)
  • jewelery making (I inherited my mother's tools and some beads, but would really like some novice info or projects)
  • felting (I know nothing about it, but it sure looks cool)
  • altering metal tins/canisters (I collect a lot of them, but other than repainting haven't done anything wild with them)
toryam 03/27/2007 #

I also had a hard time thinking of 10 things that weren't too obscure since I like experimenting with different crafts. If you get my name and know how to do something that isn't listed but isn't on my profile, feel free to teach me something different. Thanks!
So, here's my list (in no particular order) 1. Stained glass 2. woven paper purse 3. spoon bracelet 4. book purse 5. wooden inlay 6. bookbinding 7. pysanky egg 8. batik fabric 9. card making 10. altered book

toryam 03/29/2007 #

I'm revising my list, I saw a 'tatted button cross' today that was SO cool! So I'd like to add:

TATTING

thanks!

mysterygirl 03/31/2007 #
  1. crocheting those little ipod cozies or those little crochet muffins -- note : i only know how to make a single chain stitch thing.. and all the crochet terms are really confusing for me :(
  2. polymer clay crafts
  3. card making / paper crafts
  4. screen printing
  5. a purse or a tote (i have the sewing machine, but like umbrella designs said - i'm kind of scared of it unless it's clothing related)
  6. cool tshirt reconstruction stuff.

.. i can't think of anything else, but it's probably because it's so early? :(

user6311 04/ 2/2007 #

1,doll making,2,needle felting,3,making lipgloss,4,string art,5,huck embroidery,6,spoon jewelry,7,tatting,8,machbook crafts,9,paper crafts,10,fariydoor crafts.

user6787 04/ 2/2007 #

Couldn't resist this one. Ok, my list... Have fun LOL

  1. Fairy Doors (does anyone know how to do this??)

  2. Spinning yarn

  3. How to make crochet hooks

  4. Altered books

  5. lampwork beads (too big?)

  6. Needle Felting

  7. polymer clay charms

  8. any small sewing projects. I always fear I'm screwing it up and the seams are going to come undone or something. I would like to know how to make things like Ipod cozys, coin purses, makeup bags, basic simple things.

  9. Oh the biggie and most likely not going to get... stained glass. I would settle for etched glass.

If any of the above are too difficult I would be happy learning whatever it is that you do well.

user5618 04/27/2007 #

I just opened the most incredible package!!! Thank you, Natana! You certainly spoiled me. Now I can learn polymer clay AND needle felting! I can't wait. You are getting a heart for sure.

jenn

Craftycakes 04/27/2007 #

I'm so glad you liked it! With the crafts you picked there was no way I could choose just one. Hope you become as hooked as I am.

Natana

inamerica8 04/28/2007 #

I sent mine today to my partner in PA. Hope you get it soon!

toryam 05/ 2/2007 #

inamerica8 - you've got a package headed your way, be on the lookout!

inamerica8 05/ 2/2007 #

toryam-I can't wait!

alwaysjoy 05/11/2007 #

Toryam, You have a package headed your way. Hope you love it!

inamerica8 05/20/2007 #

Hi toryam-I got my package! Thank you so much. There are so many things that you sent me, I will have to find a day to sit down and start. Thank you!

toryam 05/21/2007 #

AlwaysJoy - I got your package today! I'm so excited about starting it, I just have to wait until this weekend so I have a few hours to devote to it, lol. You echoed my sentiments exactly when you said you wanted to teach how-to, not just one project! My first book will be a sketchbook for myself. Thank you so much!

inamerica - I hope you can decipher it well enough, lol. Just remember: Take it a step at a time, you don't make a quilt in a day (well, some ladies do, lol, but not the first one) Sew 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there, and before you know it you'll be snuggling under it!
