Swap Coordinator:SharonP (contact)
Swap categories: Art
Number of people in swap:29
Location:Other
Type:None
Last day to signup/drop:March 31, 2007
Date items must be sent by:May 1, 2007
Number of swap partners:5
Description:

Send 5 postcards, one each to 5 partners. But these are no ordinary postcards, either:

(1) Alter an existing postcard by writing, drawing, painting or rubberstamping on the image, glueing things onto it collage-style, or other such methods to turn it into a unique piece of mail art;

or

(2) Create an original postcard, either by hand or with your computer (there will be no anti-digital prejudice in this swap!), using an original photograph, or by whatever method works for you.

Of course, you may do some each way if you like. Be sure to write something on your postcard that tells your partner about it (if it's a photo you took, you might say what it is and why you like it or how it relates to you, for example).

These are for postcards sent as postcards, not notecards--no envelopes, no plastic coverings. Think of the stamps, the cancellation, and everything else as part of the art!

IMPORTANT: Be sure your postcard meets postal regulations, has sufficient postage, and includes your return address. I am convinced that a lot of no-sends are caused by things getting lost in the mail.

PARTICIPANTS: Must have a rating of 4.5 or higher. Newbies are welcome, but everybody, especially newbies, must have the "about me" part of their profile complete -- not just a sentence fragment or a list of what you like, but actually telling us something about yourself. Don't expect us to trust you to follow through if you are going to be cagey about letting us know something about you.

Also, if I e-mail you and you don't respond within a few days, I will drop you. If you are only able to check e-mail sporadically, send me a message and let me know that.

(You can tell who has hosted swaps here before by how cranky we are! LOL)

Hi Sharon, So much for my resolve to not sign up for more swaps! Thanks..this sounds fun!

SharonP 03/15/2007 #

Welcome! I figured I'd see some familiar names here. You start to run across the same people a lot, I notice. I suppose because we share some of the same interests.

I am actually going to add a little time to send so that participants could pace themselves and send one postcard per week for five weeks. So maybe that won't seem like piling too much more on top of your other commitments!

sharon

SharonP 03/15/2007 #

Wait, I see there are five weeks during which to send, if you count Mondays! So, if you have one ready to go by partner-assigning time, then you can coast through the month of April sending one per week.

At least, that is my suggestion!

FarStarr 03/19/2007 #

I just had HUGE inspiration..Postmuse put a link on another swap about mail art, http://www.envelopecollective.com ,and it has sparked some great ideas! I can't reveal my plans...but I'm very excited!

SharonP 03/20/2007 #

Hi, FarStarr, I checked out the site you mentioned, it's really cool Thanks for sharing the inspiration.

SharonP 03/31/2007 #

There will be a one day delay before I assign partners because one of our participants has some recent no-sends and I have contacted her and I want to give her a chance to reply before I decide whether she should remain in the swap.

So please hang in there, partners will be assigned no later than Monday morning.

Sharon P.

SharonP 04/ 1/2007 #

Thanks for your patience, everybody. Partners are assigned. s

cooan 04/ 2/2007 #

Apparently I have no life... already sent mine out :)

1 to Ottawa, 1 to Kingston, 1 to KS, 1 to TN, 1 to Germany

SharonP 04/ 2/2007 #

Way to go, cooan!

Recently I got permission from a local poet to publish one of his poems on my business Web site, and I wanted to share the link here because it's really about the kind of trading/swapping that we all do and I thought it captured the sense of it very nicely. In fact, that's why I asked if I could post it, so that I could share it with fellow swappers, and he was quite fine with that.

Anyway, it's called "The Only Fair Trade" and you can read it here: http://www.mplsobserver.com/node/1217

SharonP 04/ 2/2007 #

Oops, I forgot to make that into a link:

user1372 04/ 2/2007 #

Sent 3 to Canada, one to Germany, and one to Tennessee. Hope you all like my creations!

cooan 04/ 5/2007 #

That's a very beautiful poem! I hope you don't mind if I link to it on my lj later. :)

SharonP 04/ 5/2007 #

cooan, when I asked Todd Boss permission to share his poem on the Web, he said something like "your plumber can paint it on the side of his van if he likes!" So, I think he would be delighted to have more people read it! Thanks for offering to link to it. I really enjoy it and of course the sentiment, which seems so appropriate for folks like us!

Kudos to those who have already got their postcards out! I confess I have one made (altered, actually), and one in the works. Good thing I gave myself all month to do them!

zanylady 04/ 6/2007 #

SharonP 04/14/2007 #

Victoria, I received your alterd postcard today. Thanks! I really like it, and the note about the area was fun to read.

Sharon

redleppard 04/14/2007 #

Natalie, I have sent your postcard out twice.....the mailman keeps thinking the return address is who he delivers to....so when you receive your card you will understand why there are so many arrows pointing to your address! Hopefully the 3rd time is the charm :)

uhskee 04/14/2007 #

Mailed out two of five so far: cookiebear (Canada) and cecilia x (Germany). Hope to hear from you both that my items arrived without any trouble :) I posted them on Thu 4/12

uhskee 04/14/2007 #

oops!! I'm so embarrassed!!! I meant to put the previous comment in another swap !omg! I'm such a dough head. ok... for THIS SWAP (altered/created postcards) I mailed out two out of five today... To Emily UK and Suzylucie US

SharonP 04/14/2007 #

It would be fun to see photos of the postcards people have received. If you can scan them or take a pic with a digital camera, it would be great if you would upload them to the swap gallery.

It's important to make sure the picture isn't too large, though, because swap-bot doesn't automatically resize them for you like some sites do. So, please make the resolution 72 dpi and make sure the image is no more than 600 pixels wide before you upload it. That way, it will be easy to look at all the images that are uploaded. I'll start with the postcard that Victoria sent me.

ladydy5 04/16/2007 #

dragonfly: Thank you for the cute card. Nicely done.

dandelion 04/16/2007 #

I've received from Yooper Hill and Pootle. Thank you both! :D

redleppard 04/16/2007 #

Natalie, all the arrows to your mailing addy didn't work....the postman still redelivered it back to me. I can't believe it! Will try again to get it to you :)

SharonP 04/16/2007 #

Victoria -- even though I said the postcards should be sent without envelopes, I'd be happy to make an exception in your case! Please feel free to put it in an envelope and try again that way. And maybe bring some extra strong coffee with you to the post office when you mail it!

SharonP 04/16/2007 #

I received a postcard to day from Wackystuff. It's great, thanks! (I'll upload a photo of that one too.)

redleppard 04/18/2007 #

Well, I figured if I scribbled out my return addy then the postman would HAVE to mail it to the correct address. Keeping my fingers crossed it arrives!

suzylucie 04/18/2007 #

I received a card from Emily...so cute! I love it, it's already on the fridge! Thank you so much.

I have really enjoyed altering my postcards. I've been covered in glitter for a week (it just doesn't wash off easily!). I hope there is a #2 or even monthly (hint, hint)

SharonP 04/18/2007 #

suzylucie, I think that's a wonderful idea. And I think you are just the person to host it! LOL

The problem for me with repeating a swap is that I tend to get way more ideas than I can manage to host as it is, so I am reluctant to repeat something I have done, even when I enjoy it.

So, seriously, if somebody wants to do another altered/created postcard swap, I would be delighted -- and I'd probably even join! (if the send date is in June or later -- I am not taking on any more swap commitments for May).

FarStarr 04/20/2007 #

I recd a photo coastal postcard from cookiebear toady with a nice note..Thank you!

FarStarr 04/20/2007 #

arrgghh.. I do that everytime...I have dyslexic fingers. I mean today, not toady!

uhskee 04/20/2007 #

Mailed out three altered postcards today :) All to US: "Sharon P", "Mrs M.C.", and "AeroChik" :)

E11enT 04/20/2007 #

Farstar, your postcard is fabulous. It actually got placed inside a US Postal Service envelope. I guess they couldn't deal with it in it's original form. Thanks.

Poot6, cute and cool card.

I'm late doing mine. This weekend = promise.

SharonP 04/20/2007 #

Ellen, you're not late! I just finished mine, but I'm going to wait to mail them on Monday so I can take them to the post office and make sure I go the right postage on them. The last two are a little bigger than standard size, and I know that for US that's the same as a letter, but I'm not so sure about international.

And I don't consider myself late!

I haven't checked the gallery lately, but if anybody wants to upload images of the postcards they have received, that would be great.

FarStarr 04/21/2007 #

Hey Ellen, The PO just couldn't handle it, huh? I uploaded pictures of the cards I sent.

wackystuff 04/21/2007 #

I received an unusual fabric card today from Marlene. Thanks a bunch.

SharonP 04/21/2007 #

FarStarr, those are great postcards.

Susan B in Palm City. Received your postcard today and was so surprised that it arrived in perfect condition. I use to go to the beach when I lived in Melbourne, Fla. and watch those turtles dig. Thanks for the memory. Diane

You're welcome Farstarr! :0)

SharonP 04/28/2007 #

I received an altered postcard featuring Texas bluebonnets with some cute critter embellishments from Craftbrown 1 today. Connie, is that a photo that you took yourself? Did you really have bluebonnets in full bloom in March when we were buried under snow in Minnesota? I am so jealous! (However, my tulips are blooming now, so I am not too jealous -- I am only retroactively jealous for the month of March.)

mrsmc 04/30/2007 #

dragonfly, rnwannabe, dali, cooan and suzylucie... postcards ready to go in tomorrow's mail...on the deadline...i hope it doesn't take them forever in the mail!

suzylucie 05/ 1/2007 #

Aerochick and Sharon, received your great postcards in the mail. Loved them both, and Sharon, I had admired yours on Flickr and thought it was a vivid representation of a beautiful Saturday morning...one of those days you know is going to be great. Anyway I was thrilled to get it and it's just awesome!

SharonP 05/ 1/2007 #

Thanks, suzylucie, I'm so glad you liked the card.

I noticed that all but two people have clicked the "sent" button -- and one those is craftbrown1, whose card I received recently! So, I know she has sent and just didn't click yet. Hopefully, the same is also true of Liz, or maybe she's mailing hers today.

Please keep posting here as you receive postcards, it helps me to track how it's going.

Thanks for playing everybody!

pootle 05/ 3/2007 #

Received from Lucyellen a really cool collage card - thanks, I especially like the duck!

SharonP 05/ 3/2007 #

I received a cheery daffodil photo card from vmlay today. Thanks!
