this is an international swap*

make 1 primitive heart ornament/softie and send to 1 partner

the ornament/softie should be something you can hang up so be sure to add some twine, wire or other hanging thing at the top...AND even though i am calling it a softie, primitives can be stuffed with not so soft things, such as sawdust, dry flowers,herbs, old yarn scraps , etc....

what is "primitive" you say???

primitive folk art ( including art dolls, ornaments, illustrations, altered art, etc) is a catagory of art & craft that closley resembles early american folk art.

(*folk art is just that, the art of the people, art that is also sometimes for utility sake as well, it does not aspire to resemble that of the "masters". it is truly the creation of everyday folk)

as the word primitive suggests its creations have rudimentary, simple, basic design and normally look rusted, aged, tattered, grungy & frayed. i encourage you to make your own patters with this one!

techniques commonly used to give creations a "old world" effect are rusting, painting, baking, sanding, rubbing with sandpaper, over dying with coffee or tea, etc...

btw this is my first try at obtaining that "primitive" effect, i am practicing for the makings of a primitive grungy rag doll later this year, so beginners at primitive crafting are most welcome!

i just wanted to note, that my swaps are usually not specific, BUT for this swap your heart must be finished in "primitive " style folk art. this means BE SURE TO HAVE A LOOK at some examples before you get to work on creating. a few styles that COULD be confused with primitive are; shabby chic,vintage or american country.

This is on my watchlist, but I have a question... Can we specify what style of primitive heart we would like? For example, I love vintage and shabby chic styles, but I really don't like American country/folk art. Please let me know!

well pretty princess, primitive is a style all on its own, your heart should not be "vintage" or "shabby chic" in the way i think you might be thinking, please be sure to visit some of the links i have posted to see exactly what primitive looks like!

i guess your answer would be no, you may not request from your partner any specific style, i really dont like to limit the artists creativity too much!

i will make this post with the utmost respect for my partner...

i recieved my heart today and it is the most beautiful, excellently crafted vintage softtie heart i have ever recieved!!!

but

is is not "prim" exactly,

i want to implore you all when rating your partner, please be observant and kind in rating 3 if you heart is not exactly prim!!!! i know i spoke specifically about what it should be but i see now i was not entirely clear....and please if your partner made something close, then DO give them the 5 or hearts they deserve, its my fault as host for not explaining properly, not theirs!!!

that being said i adore the heart i recieved!!

I think the prim style is very obvious but to some after signing up, might have found it harder to achieve than others. I was completely spoiled by my partner and received the most wonderful primitive doll one could receive however the hard work that she put in to it deserved the 5 plus heart not that it was overly primitive. A 3 ruined my perfect rating and can not be fixed so as a member of the swap, I just suggest you talk with your partner if you are disappointed in your item not being primitive enough before you rate a 3.
