Rice University in Houston is having a free digital conference on the intersection of faith and science on Friday, June 5. It was originally an on-campus event, but the coronavirus moved it online. Click the link for the schedule to see which sessions you're interested in and for more information. I was going to just post an announcement on the group page to let group members know about this event, but decided a swap would be good for discussion. The event “How Science and Faith Can Strengthen Your Church,” is free, but you have to register. Here is a Houston Chronicle story about it. There may be a paywall on the website, so I’m posting as much info here as possible. The conference coordinator and director of the Religion and Public Life Program at the university told the newspaper: “Everything related to science and faith now needs to be understand in the context of COVID-19.” In recent years, she said, there’s been a tendency to view science and religion as incompatible, and to think of the “religious scientist” as an “oxymoron.” “That kind of thinking is, I would say, mildly annoying at best in non-pandemic times,” she said. “But it can even be deadly in pandemic times.” Let’s hear the discussions between and among national faith leaders and scientists. The conference runs from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Central time. Since it's just us, I assigned partners. Today's mail brought the book, "Why Science and Faith Need Each Other," so I must have been one of the early registrants. Looking forward to the presentations tomorrow.

Opening plenary session: 10:15a Takeaway

The question I asked was completely ignored: why were all of the conversation speakers from the Baptist tradition and if there was thought into having a mix of faith leaders.

I cant believe that it was full. I didn't realize that there were limits to zooms. The question you had as to having a mix of faith leaders is a good one. I believe hearing ideas from different denominations is always good. There are so many ways of looking at ideas and the more input, the more we have to think about.

I missed 1.5 of the sessions because of work, enjoyed the ones I did hear.

The opening plenary was by Elaine Howard Ecklund, the conference coordinator and author of "Why Science and Faith Need Each Other." Her book is about eight shared values of faith and science communities: curiosity, doubt, humility, creativity, healing, hope, Shalom, and gratitude. In her presentation, she referenced Philippians 4:8 "whatever is true, whatever is honorable..."

The best takeaway from her plenary was this example: Doing something about climate change is living our faith, it's caring for neighbors around the globe.

From the session by Dr. Mark Labberton, president of the Fuller Seminary in California, my biggest takeaway was this: faith has restrained serious questions of mysteries.

And from the Rev. Lee Hsia, pastor of the Downtown Campus of Houston's First Baptist Church: "The entire Bible is about wrestling with God. David did it all the time. Wrestle with God in prayer and when you're reading His word."

Labberton was the second plenary session.

Hsia was on the panel discussing Human Origins and Human Uniqueness.
