(This swap is inspired by the Learn a New Language swap.)

  • International
  • Swappers with rating 4 and above; no no-sends
  • Newbies with proper profile welcomed

Instead of purchasing a book and sending it someone to learn a language, YOU shall teach your partner some words in another language you know. It's much cheaper and personal that way.

For those who are partnered with someone who knows the same language as you, teach your buddy some of the basics of the language you WISH to learn.

GUIDELINES (not required) - Greetings like 'hello', 'goodbye', 'my name is...' - Saying 'Sorry', 'Thank you', 'You're welcome', etc - Numbers - Colors - NO CRUDE WORDS PLEASE

Hand-written or type-written, it doesn't matter. As long as it's legible and AT LEAST a page full.

Along with that, add a short note of why you took up the language, if you like it or what you wish to learn in future, etc.

Do include what language(s) you can speak/write and what you wish to learn in the comments below.

And a gentle reminder to remember to rate your buddy (it only take a few minutes) and if you think you've benefited from his/her efforts, give a HEART!

I took English and Chinese Mandarin in school and speak it daily. (I know a little dialect too) Currently learning Malay from my boyfriend.

Would love to learn Arab, Japanese, German, Spanish or French.

Cloverst 04/22/2007 #

Good swap, can I ask that phonetics be included too? I'd like to make sure I was saying it right!

I can teach German and French and would love to learn any language other than Spanish as I know most of it but aren't confident enough to teach it lol!

Particularly interested in Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Swedish.

mayki76 04/22/2007 #

will it be by e-mail or by "real" letter?

Margih 04/22/2007 #

I love this swap! My mother tongue is Finnish and I know Swedish, English, German, Russian and Greek. Swedish and English better than German and Russian. Greek is the weakest at the moment. But I know the alphabets and can write both Russian and Greek and manage with the basics.

I`m interested in any language excluded these mentioned above, naturally :) And if the writing differs from ours I´d love to something about it, too.

user7115 04/22/2007 #

I speak English (obviously), Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, and I'm currently taking an intro to Portuguese class.

I'd like to learn Japanese, Italian, Polish, or Korean. I love the way those languages sound.

hyperoma 04/22/2007 #

Cloverst: Include anything that you think should be included!

Mayki76: Snail mail. Different softwares might be needed to read different characters, that'd be troublesome.

user6953 04/22/2007 #

I can speak A little bit of Spanish, French, Japanese, Latin, and German, very little. I'm best with Japanese and english, on a side note, anyone wanting to learn a computer language, that was started up by hackers a while ago, called leet, I know all of that. And I know the language of building a website, very well, for any interested, I can send some side stuff of that. ^_^

I am VERY interested in learning more Japanese and Latin. VERY VERY interested ;)

lucias 04/23/2007 #

My mother tongue is Mandarin, but I also use English and Norwegian everyday. I can read Danish and Swedish, also know some Japanese.

I'd like to learn some words, including 'peace' 'love' 'children', in French, Arabic, Spanish, Finish, German and other languages.

lucias 04/23/2007 #

I also know a bit of the different sign languages used in China and Norway.

keroleen73 04/23/2007 #

Hmmm, what about if we can't offer the language/s our partner wishes for? I speak German, English, French, Latin, Italian and some Japanese. I'm interested in Russian, Hebrew and Portuguese, although Spanish might come in handy too.

hyperoma 04/23/2007 #

keroleen73: first priority is teaching your partner the language YOU KNOW and she doesn't. (doesn't matter whether she requested for it)

if not, teach her something YOU WANT to learn. but if she knows that too, then teach her something that SHE WANTS to learn. (can be easily found on the internet, but please don't copy off. make it more personal)

abendbrot 04/25/2007 #

I speak English, and German.

I think it would be fun to learn Korean, Chinese (Mandarin), Tagalog, or Italian, Hungarian, Swedish, Norwegian....

memmu 04/27/2007 #

My mother tongue is Finnish and I know English, Swedish, German, French and Spanish, also a little bit of Italian.

I'd love to learn some Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Dutch or just about any language I don't already know. For example, how to count from 1 to 10, how to say I love you or Good Morning, the colors, "my name is..." etc.

shopinc 04/28/2007 #

I can speak English and Mandarin (Chinese) pretty fluently. I know a little Malay, French and Japanese as well.

Would love to learn Korean, Tagalog and Latin. I'd like to learn how to count from 1 to 10, and to say everyday-use phrases like 'Hi', 'Good morning', 'I love you', 'Joy', etc.
Thanks!

EmilyBemily 05/ 1/2007 #

My native language is English. I'm currently learning French since I now live in France. I used to study Spanish so I would say I know that too. I am interested in learning Japanese and Chinese and relearning Hebrew, but I would love to learn any other language that I don't currently know.

user7866 05/ 1/2007 #

I love the idea of this swap! I'm a newbie, but have feedback elsewhere, I listed on my profile just in case.

I know English and Japanese. If my partner is interested in learning Japanese or English are they allowed to message me with their requests?

I'd love to learn some Mandarin or Cantonese, Korean, or any language you would be willing to teach me. ^_^

Elcoeda 05/ 1/2007 #

Hi ! I signed up and just relized I didn't leave my languages here...

So I speak English and French fluently, I know a little bit of German (but haven't spoken in a while, it would be a good way to catch up) and some Japanese, though not fluent.

I'd really like to learn some correan, russian, or any african language... Or some scandinavian language... Actually any language I don't know, except Spanish, Italien or Dutch, of which I've some knowledge already.

Thank you !

citizenblue 05/ 3/2007 #

omg! reading everyone's comments makes me feel lazy! i speak english, some spanish, and a tiny bit of german. i love learning languages (i have a ton of books on lots of obscure languages) and am willing to learn anything. i like to know basic conversation and how to put together sentences.

this is awesome, thank you for creating this swap!

user6740 05/ 3/2007 #

Interested in anything but: Arabic, French, Spanish, English and Norwegian (my friend lives in Norway; I'm learning from her!)

user6740 05/ 3/2007 #

By the way - would it be possible to teach someone morse code; I'm pretty fluent in it! If not, I'll just do it as an extra bit!

user8087 05/ 3/2007 #

Thanks Lene, you got me hooked onto swapbot! lol.

I learnt English, Mandarin in school and picked up Malay and a touch of Bahasa Indonesia from parents and grandparents.

I'm open to any other languages(except those mentioned above), especially Korean, Latin and French.

hyperoma 05/ 4/2007 #

Ayii: Morse code is awesome! I for one would love to learn that.

mercurialmagpie 05/ 4/2007 #

My first language is English and I can also speak some French and German. I am big language geek (I'm starting my graduate degree in TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), so I'm interested in any language really, but especially Romantic and Germanic languages, though Gaelic and Welsh are fascinating to me too! :)

hyperoma 05/ 6/2007 #

mercurialmagpie: this swap is perfect for you then XD

RudeNun 05/ 6/2007 #

hyperoma, I'd thought about joining when one of my friends joined, but figured I'd think about it some more. Thanks for the invite!

Let's see, I can teach English & Spanish. I really want to improve my Italian. I'd love to learn Latin tho'. But any language would be great!

user4859 05/10/2007 #

I can speak German, English, Japanese and Russian.

Would be interested in any other language you can teach me (or some things more in Japanese and Russian^_~)

user5875 05/10/2007 #

I can speak English, Spanish, and basic Dutch. I would love to learn any European language or a language with a non-latin alphabet (especially Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, Greek or Japanese). A lesser-known language would also be fascinating. Ok, I guess that pretty much covers it.

Susi 05/12/2007 #

Although my "native langusge is English, I speak spanish like a native as well. I love the language and the culture! I could do a page easily with basic phrases, and words in spanish, but what is spanish is not a language is looking to learn? I wouldnot want to disappoint them, and I don't feel comfortable teaching a language i don't know, especially off the internet, since the translations seem to be quite literal, and not correct. What so we do in that situation? susi pls pm me with with answer! thanks!

dimanche 05/12/2007 #

I speak English and French, and want to learn Portugese and Turkish.

irisheye 05/12/2007 #

This is an awesome swap!! I know English natively (but I guess everyone here does), took quite a bit of French in high school, and am currently taking Italian to fulfill my language requirement for college. I would love to learn anything but Spanish or German.... and I do mean anything! :) Would love pronunciation approximates, as well... tho if you happen to know IPA that helps too!

dephal 05/17/2007 #

What a fun idea! I'm not fluent in anything other than English, but I do know some Spanish, French, Russian, German, Hebrew, and Latin. And I own quite a few dcitionaries. :-) I'd especially love to learn some Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Portuguese, Punjabi, or Italian, but I'd be happy with anything. I would really appreciate a pronounciation guide, too!

tejiendopalabras 05/18/2007 #

hi there! i love the idea of this swap!! i'm new to swap-bot and fairly new to swapping in general, but i promise i'll do my best! my mother tongue is Spanish, i can also speak English (pretty obvious), German and Italian. a bit of French and Greek. some words in Portuguese (not much, really, although i'd love to know more!). i'm interested in all languages. even for the languages i already know, i'm pretty sure you could teach me some slang (not rude words, please). and i would love to be able to write and read the words, so i'd appreciate some phonetics help. hyperoma, i hope you don't mind i'm a newby. and thank you very much for the nice idea.

user8406 05/19/2007 #

I'm new here and thrilled to have found this awesome swap! I love language and cultural studies. While English is my native language (obviously), I studied Spanish for 2 years in jr. high, 2 years in high school, and 2 semesters in college. Currently I'm studying Italian since my heritage is Italian (my maternal grandmother was born and lived for many years in Milan before coming to America, as well as several of my aunts & uncles). It's through home study courses I've borrowed from the local library and will be purchasing before the library copies are due back. While I'm only on Lesson Three of the very intensive audio/print Living Language ULTIMATE ITALIAN Basic/Intermediate Course, I'm taking my studies extremely seriously and feel confident I could teach some basics in the language or Spanish or English. (Wouldn't the chance to teach another what I'm learning in Italian be an awesome test of how well I'm actually learning?! WOW!!!)

As per languages I'd love to learn, while I'd especially love to learn more Italian, I'm very open to learning any language I don't already know, such as Polish, the native Hawaiian language, Swahili, any other African language, Greek, Japanese, Chinese, Norwegian, Russian, Hebrew, Yiddish, etc., etc., etc. (Please note that my examples are just that, EXAMPLES of but SOME of the languages I'd love to learn. ANY language would please me greatly. And I"m fascinated with the posts from the people who mentioned Morse code and sign language.)

This is absolutely the most WONDERFUL swap idea I've seen while parousing Swap-Bot this afternoon. Pleae definitely COUNT ME IN! :-)
