Let’s Build a Journal #1

For these swaps, we will be creating various spreads and other additions to add to our journals.

For this first swap, we will be creating a two page spread. You will start by taking a sturdy piece of 8x11 paper (cardstock, scrapbook paper, watercolour paper, mixed media paper, etc) and folding it so it measures 8x5.5. This will be the maximum size of all our spreads, although some may be smaller for added interest. For additional strength, add some kind of tape along both sides of the fold. Keep in mind as we go along that we will be keeping these flat, so no bulky additions to keep our postage rates down.

Now, the fun begins. Slap on some gesso, some paint, some torn paper, some more paint, whatever moves you until you are happy with the result. Then add some detail stuff like stamping, fussy cuts, ephemera, die cuts, stitches, fabric bits, etc. Do this to both sides. Keep in mind that your pages may or may not end up being a center spread so both sides of the fold do not have to be alike. Create something you would like to add to your own journal.

Going forward, some of these will be themed. Some will also be very basic so our partners can add their own details. We will also be creating pages with pockets, tuck ins, etc.

When you receive your spreads, tuck them away until we get enough to create a signature. I will leave the decision of when that is up to each individual as well as the final size of the journals.
