Shoes in our time period 1775-1820s were straight lasted – meaning no difference between left or right and were made by a Cordwainer what we would now call a deluxe shoemaker. They were very much a luxury item and passed down to others as inheritance gifts. Most everyday shoes did not survive sadly, so we only have the most extraordinary shoes to study. By the advent of the Regency Era women’s shoes changed in style from handsome kitten like heels to the equivalent of today’s ballet pumps, with flat heels, worn with white stockings, & much lighter in substance, usually silks, and fastened with ribbons for balls & dancing, or laces and all leather for low heeled day shoes/boots. Swap: send your partner a well filled Regency-styled slipper. Decorate lovingly but do keep the embellishments flat & soft. This will allow for cheap postage practice for any international swaps you choose to join. You may use the shoe template provided or use any you find online. A shoe of about 5 - 7 inches long is adequate. Add a low heel or shoe back if you wish, or choose a slip on slipper style. Raid your stash and fill the shoe with lovely cloth or paper ephemera. These will make a nice tuck-in for our journals if you wish. A hanging tree decoration, or hang from your mirror. Don’t forget to write a nice note in your character's voice chatting about 'your shoe'. |
