Description:

Anyone else love all the steampunk artwork showing up on Etsy and Livejournal? Do yo love old watch parts, gears, compasses and other cool odds and ends? For this swap you will make your partner one item that they can wear (pendant, watch, bracelet, ring, pin, messenger bag, pocket watch, tote bag, goggles, hat etc...) with a steam punk design. Great place to look for items to alter or use to make your steampunk inspires piece would be thrift stores or antique stores. Remember that you are making something that can be worn on the body.

Steampunk is a sub-genre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles, analog computers, or digital mechanical computers (such as Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine); these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or with a presumption of functionality. I love the movie the Time Machine and that would be perfect inspiration for this swap!

Really the potential is endless. usually steampunk has a lot of copper, brass, bronze colors

looks old

kind of a mix between industrial, Victorian and robotic is cool with some art deco thrown in.

great supplies are

old wind up watches, watch faces, old funky keys, locks, gears, of any sort old pocket watches or pocket watch parts, old bits of metal, found objects old postcards and old script writing, old maps

Michaels carries Tim Holtz things that are very cool and would be great for this (have found gear stencils, metal keys and locks watch rubber stamps)

I hate to put a value on handmade swaps but with the cost of supplies and time you should create a piece that you would value at $20 or more. Also to create your piece please plan to spend at least an hour creating it. I would really love everyone to get an exceptional piece that they will want to wear and show off for years to come!

To join this swap, you must have a 4.9 rating or higher with at least 20 hearts to join (from snail mail swaps). You must also have signed into swap bot within a week of the last day to sign up. This swap is international :). I am leaving a nice long time after partners are drawn for you to search out or order online cool items for you to use to create your steampunk creation and for you to make it. Due to the cost of supplies and time involved in this swap I will not be able to angel it but will do my best to weed out any flakers on the swap before assigning partners.

i love necklaces, the longer the better i'm plus size! short ones choke me! i love earrings with wires, long dangly ones are fab! watches - too cool, especially loosely fitting ones like bracelets no really to much of a ring wearer anymore. like pocket watch type pendants love tote bags with long strap that can be worn cross wise over one shoulder to the waist on the other side but i've never seen a steam punk tote bag! don't wear hats don't really wear pins much.

this is a cool swap, thanks for hosting it!

I don't have enough hearts to take part, but just wanted to let people know that a great "mainstream" source of inspiration about Steampunk is the movie Wild Wild West with Will Smith ;)

ViolaOdorata 07/18/2009 #

I want to join but I need some more hearts (have 23 now but they include 8 email swap ones), I'm on swap-bot for just 2 months now and sending to different country's can be very slow when customs holds down a package. I do have a great idea for what to make already so I hope I get those 5 hearts in time (or the coordinator to be very kind to me and let me join)

ViolaOdorata 07/22/2009 #

I got those extra 5 hearts really fast so I joined the swap. :-D

I would like: * Bracelet 8 1/2" * Pendant/Watch on a long, long chain * Pin/Brooch * Messenger bag * Tote bag (Like slewis - long, long straps * Earrings * Carpetbag to use to carry my artistical things ;-}

I plan to join this swap i love the steampunk genre - i'm a steampunk and mixed media jewellery designer so this swap is perfect. However due to a recent increase in international shipping costs, the only thing i can afford to send is a necklace (because i can send it "flat"). My website as a sample of my work - i just thought it would be best to note this before partners were assigned. Thanks

ViolaOdorata 07/28/2009 #

I would like most things but I won't ware goggles and I can't wear metal earrings other than silver (I usually wear silver or bone). Other jewelery don;t have to be silver as long I wear them just occasionally. If you need any measurements massage me!

I work with leather so I will contact my parter to make sure it isn't a problem (I can use fake leather also but it wouldn't look the same)

LittleCakes 08/ 2/2009 #

Looking forward to getting partners! For the record...Brooch, pendant...anything really except the goggles...no goggles necessary.

tiaragoth 08/ 7/2009 #

I'd love a Steampunk pocket watch or a pair of goggles or a necklace. Anything but earrings really : )

kchristisen 08/ 9/2009 #

I don't have my ears pierced but anything else would be fun.
