Anyone else love all the steampunk artwork showing up on Etsy and Livejournal? Do yo love old watch parts, gears, compasses and other cool odds and ends? For this swap you will make your partner one item that they can wear (pendant, watch, bracelet, ring, pin, messenger bag, pocket watch, tote bag, goggles, hat etc...) with a steam punk design. Great place to look for items to alter or use to make your steampunk inspires piece would be thrift stores or antique stores. Remember that you are making something that can be worn on the body. Steampunk is a sub-genre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles, analog computers, or digital mechanical computers (such as Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine); these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or with a presumption of functionality. I love the movie the Time Machine and that would be perfect inspiration for this swap! Really the potential is endless. usually steampunk has a lot of copper, brass, bronze colors looks old kind of a mix between industrial, Victorian and robotic is cool with some art deco thrown in. great supplies are old wind up watches, watch faces, old funky keys, locks, gears, of any sort old pocket watches or pocket watch parts, old bits of metal, found objects old postcards and old script writing, old maps Michaels carries Tim Holtz things that are very cool and would be great for this (have found gear stencils, metal keys and locks watch rubber stamps) I hate to put a value on handmade swaps but with the cost of supplies and time you should create a piece that you would value at $20 or more. Also to create your piece please plan to spend at least an hour creating it. I would really love everyone to get an exceptional piece that they will want to wear and show off for years to come! To join this swap, you must have a 4.9 rating or higher with at least 20 hearts to join (from snail mail swaps). You must also have signed into swap bot within a week of the last day to sign up. This swap is international :). I am leaving a nice long time after partners are drawn for you to search out or order online cool items for you to use to create your steampunk creation and for you to make it. Due to the cost of supplies and time involved in this swap I will not be able to angel it but will do my best to weed out any flakers on the swap before assigning partners. |
