I have always been interested in joining a bookmark swap, but never have because I'm not quite sure what the guidelines are. Right now I am thinking I would just make them on a cardstock base, but don't want to send someone paper and then get something intricately beaded (for example) in return. Are there any rules/suggestions as to what they should be made of?

rose-hips, that's a great quesion, I never thought of it since I'm new to making bookmarks, but you're right. You'd feel bad making a paper one when someone else made a much more complex one. And of course they'd be dissapointed in the swap they received.

Since the person you send to isn't the person who will be sending to you it doesn't matter. If someone sends you a beaded one then chances are whoever their partner is may or not send them one.I think most bookmarks are made from card stock.

I've sent both woven and bobbin lace bookmarks in previous swaps and received card ones back and I've not been disappointed. Other factors such as how well-made the bookmark is, how functional it is and how much thought seems to have gone into it are at least as important as the technique used. I've also received bookmarks which were very elaborate but sloppily made and not very practical and been disappointed by those.

For a quotation-themed swap such as this one, cardstock (possibly but not necessarily laminated) seems to be the natural way to go, as the focus is on the quotation rather than decoration.

I sometimes assume that people will naturally use a stiff background for their bookmarks.I would never use paper or even card stock without laminating.I would suggest using chipboard easily found in scrapbook stores for the book marks.I'm sorry that i didn't add this to the requirements.

I am sure that all of us will make beautiful book marks and do our best.

Just an FYI for whoever has me- I'm fine with unlaminated cardstock bookmarks, that's what I usually use if I'm not using a bookthong.

Me too. I really would prefer my bookmark not to be too thick, as I don't think that is very good for the books, though I received a thicker one recently which I like very much. I think that the standard weight of card you get in big packs at the stationers (160 gsm in Europe, don't know the lb equivalent)is a bit flimsy if unlaminated, but still usable. I usually use 2 layers of 160 gm or a heavier weight (220 or 300 gsm).
