Description:

I saw this on a shopping site and, loving paper like I do, I thought it would be fun to make a paper bird garland, measuring at LEAST 2 feet long. The idea is to have birds on a length of string, with beads (or nothing) in between. For instance, if your 'string' (which could be fishing line, ribbon, yarn) is 2 feet long, you might choose to put a bird every 4 inches. Your garland can either hang vertically or horizontally, and the number of birds included on the length is up to you.

Birds can be embellished with eyes, feathers, glitter, or perhaps cut out of glitter paper! You can make them double sided (or use double-sided paper!) or just decorate one side. You might select a color theme from your partners' profiles and go with different patterns of paper in that color. Birds can also be left plain--up to the artist's discretion. Please check profiles, though, to try and get a feel for partner's likes/dislikes. For instance, don't make a primitive garland for someone who is in to frilly pink things!

Requirements:

Bird garland must measure at least 2 feet long and can be longer (artist's discretion)

Artist must provide some way to hang the garland (loop at the top or on both sides depending upon horizontal or vertical orientation).

Birds must be made out of paper--different types of embellishments may be added, but base of bird must be paper. I would suggest NOT using anything super flimsy, unless that fits in with your design.

You will send one (1) garland to one (1) partner, and receive one (1) garland in return.

I am going to list this swap as international since paper birds should not weigh much; I will get partners assigned immediately after the last sign-up date so that you will know if you want to use beads in your design, as that would add more weight (if you get an international partner).

PLEASE send and send on time. Your partners are counting on you!

Birds are the harbingers of springtime--let's fill our homes with their beauty!

I am really liking this idea. But is creating 2 garlands a bit too much work...to have done by the 17th? Would more people sign up if it was one partner? For now I am watching...but I do like the idea a lot!!

homeandheart 01/30/2010 #

I am with @phillyzee I think its a DARLING idea, but for me I couldn't make two nice enough in that time. Great idea though. I hope you do another one with a longer lead time! :-)

I agree with the others. I'm going to watch for now, but would definitely join if it were just one partner.

Actually these little birds don't take that long to make. I did this with almost every class I had while teaching. Granted each child only made 1 or 2 birds but they loved it and would have made more if they could have. I think it's a brilliant swap and will definately sign up as soon as I sign 1 or 2 other swaps off. I would love two partners

Hi all...thanks for your comments. I changed number of partners from 2 to 1. I don't think they will take long to make but the deadline is early so hopefully this will attract people.

Gofeen, I think you are right about it not taking too long, but since it is a "new" swap, maybe getting started with one partner will help folks to try it out. I was thinking we could do one monthly, or with different objects--flowers, butterflies, cats--almost anything could be used. And if you are interested in receiving two, you and I could always do a private swap of birds.

If you google "bird template" you can find all kinds of ideas!

It's O.K. I'll be happy with one partner. I think making a different one each month is a great idea!

Although you have changed the number from 2 to 1, your words still say two, confusing or what? Love the idea and will sign up NOW.

isabellasnow 02/ 5/2010 #

Yes, boatingbelle....I goofed! Will correct it now. I missed that one. I wanted to remind everyone that if you are using heavier beads, please somehow reinforce your holes, especially if you are making a longer garland. I probably don't need to say this to such talented folks, but I thought it worth a mention.
