Description:

Check out this page to see the interesting days we can celebrate together in April. The original idea for this swap was from @craftygirl who hosts something similar monthly in the open swap forum. She has kindly given us permission to use and alter it. :)

However, if you have participated in the last three swaps... pay attention! We are changing it up a bit for April Fool's Day. (Alhough, it has nothing to do with a practical joke!)

For this swap you will choose at least 3 of the unique holidays listed at the above site, and figure out something to send your partner to help celebrate those days. You may choose DAYS or your gift may represent the WEEK or MONTH holidays (you will understand when you see the site) At least one of the items must be "literary" in nature (which may be simple to apply to School Librarian Day or Library Week!). It does not necessarily need to be a book (although it could be), but something related to books...book plates, a bookmark, pages from a dictionary (if your partner likes to craft with them), even a journal, etc.

Your gifts cannot ALL be one category, such as stickers or cards... and while one item could potentially apply to more than one day, each item must represent only one holiday in your final tally.

**** Here is the change****

This month, the package MUST fit in a (fairly) flat 6x9 envelope. (It can be bumpy... these rules are flexible! But the idea is a slimmer package, not a box) If it will mess up one of your articles to fold it, go ahead and use the larger 8x10 size (or whatever it is, 9x12?). But, think "slim". (You can not be rated down for exceeding the size limits, it's just a game. We are having fun here. I can't imagine mine will fit in a 6x9 but I am going to try!! :)

HOWEVER (here's where it gets interesting) the challenge is to try to send something for as many of the days as possible, ALL fitting within the envelope. Make it a diverse and interesting parcel, something really fun to open. It doesn't need to cost a lot of money. You can find plenty of fun things that are inexpensive or even handmade. Think flat...stationery is great... but there are limitless options, if you are creative... a comb, deck of playing cards, pack of gum, slim journal, old key, piece of jewelry, postcard, foreign money, a sketch, a cd, a Scrabble tile...I could go on forever, but you get the idea.

Once you receive your package I'd love to hear how many holidays everyone fits into their package.

I won't put a minimum cost on here. It may cost you very little, or you might want to spend more. But it WILL take thought and organization on your part to make it special. The key is make it a package you would love to receive, something that will really make your partner smile.

So... one partner, one package, at least 3 items which represent three unique holidays. (at least one of those will be somehow book-related), all Items fitting in a 6x9 (or larger) envelope (padded or not, as you see fit), and challenging yourself to also fit in EXTRA days. (good luck!!... only three are required to receive a five rating, the extras are a challenge to yourself just to see how many can be worked into such a small package!) And don't forget to include a little note telling why you chose each item (what day they represent), the swap name, and your swap-bot ID. Got it?

Next month's swap will be back to normal!

Maybe we should have a little prize for the person that fits the most days in? They have to be "real" gifts... like, not a srap of fabric or a tissue... but they WILL have to be pretty small!! And actually some things that people would consider trash YOUR partner might love, like the Srabble tile... I like getting little charms or bits of things I might use on an ATC or an envelope...It might be fun but I don't want to cause any hard feelings with people saying this shouldn't count or something... we would just trust the sender's judgement!...

Just something small for the prize; some hand made bookplates maybe? (I have an adorable classic Winnie the Pooh bookplate stamp, I could stamp some up...)

Oh, man! I'm guilty of usually packing a box of stuff, limiting myself to a 6x9" envelope will be tough! :) I guess I should go peruse the list of holidays for ideas...

hollycm6 02/10/2010 #

I assumed most of us might be, which is superfun for BOTH parties... hopefully this will be fun, too? (we'll see! ) I have a pretty firm suspicion that I might have to go larger, 8x10, but I shouldn't go into it with that attitude! I am going to try REALLY hard...

gracielous 02/10/2010 #

This is going to be hard but I am looking forward to the challenge. It is going to be fun.

hollycm6 02/10/2010 #

Yes I need to get March done so I can focus on April!! :)

hollycm6 02/19/2010 #

I will still be away on the 26th... if I can get to a computer, I will set up partners. If not, I will do it as soon as I am back. I hope this won't inconvenience you.

I had a harder time with this month Holidays and then I missed the deadline, too. Okay, next month, next round. But I am interested in the results of this month :) Are you going to post in the forum?

I "think" I might be up to 20 different holidays/month/week ideas, if I finish them all. Now to see if it will be FLAT or not lol. I think I might have underestimated the height of the flatness. All the items could be flat but it might be a tall flat package lol.

Ari 03/ 3/2010 #

LOL, you have me beat. I think I'm only up to... four or five? The whole keeping it flat thing is a challenge!

hollycm6 03/ 3/2010 #

Ha ha!! And... I still have to START!!!! My goal for this week. :)

gracielous 03/ 3/2010 #

Yeah I don't think I can reach 20 different holidays. The flat part is challenging but I think it has led me to some really neat ideas. It has been really fun to think up different flatter options.

hollycm6 03/ 4/2010 #

My daughter and I were looking at it today and it WAS fun. I am not sure about TWENTY, though. You have set the bar high!!!

staceyb 03/ 4/2010 #

Well I think I might have been a little loosey goosey with the 'flat' rule. My goal was, if it would fit in a bubble envelope without making the envelope not rectangle anymore, then it's flat! But I have yet to try fitting all my things in one envelope heh. Either way it has been fun so far. :)

hollycm6 03/ 4/2010 #

I just got a bunch of stuff today... It WON'T be a 6x9 envie. I will try the next size up... I might have to put the envie inside a box for safety's sake!!! I am going to TRY HARD to get it into an envelope!!! (My flat things aren't all flat, either. :)

hollycm6 03/ 5/2010 #

Oh my...mine is NOT flat. I have 18 days done, but.... some of them might not be able to stay! And two are tall so HAVE to be in a big envelope. How dumb! Well, I lose!! :)

staceyb 03/ 5/2010 #

Well I think you still win, because the point is to have fun and put together a great swap right? :)

Ari 03/ 6/2010 #

I think I'm going to have to go with a larger bubble envelope, the 6x9 isn't going to cut it... :)

hollycm6 03/ 6/2010 #

Oh my, I have a lot of days in there. You're right, we all win! :)
