Crazy Quilting (aka Crazy Patchwork)

...used to be a means to use up what was in the scrap bin. Ladies would use all types of fabric in these patchwork blankets, and showcase their embroidery skills at the same time. The results are quite stunning! If you're unfamiliar with them, Wikipedia has a decent description, and of course, googling them will give you many images.

About This Swap:

  • use a 12.5" square of fabric (your choice), and applique onto that overlapping or abbutting pieces of scrap fabric - either by hand or machine
  • please use a minimum of five distinct fabrics, and if you can, try to include some different textures - pieces should be irregular in shape (i.e., no actual pattern)
  • adorn your work - you can go with the traditional hand-embroidery, or choose to machine embroidery, or apply other embellishments like lace, ribbon, etc
  • make two squares - one for each of two partners

Who May Join:

Swappers should have:
* minimum of 4.8 overall rating
* no 1s nor 3s in past six months
* minimum of ten, group-3 swaps done & rated
* IF you would like to join but don't meet these criteria, and feel that there is reason to be considered, please send me a message. I know that circumstances sometimes exist which make these broad rules less appropriate.

Edited:

By request of a participant, I've extended the send date by 2 weeks ... allowing lots & lots of time to complete your two squares. (o:

Are we finishing the square somehow? Would it be all right to make something with the 12.5" fabric...maybe a bag or a pillowcase? Just want to be sure I'm understanding. I do love crazy quilts and patchwork....this is on my watchlist for now. :)

biscuitsandyarn, generally these block swaps are just for the unfinished block--the blocks you receive can then be used for whatever you want, adding to a quilt top, made into an embellishment for clothing, a bag or a pillow, etc.

The best crazy quilting blog Scroll down the side to get to the tutorials, stitch dictionary, and eye candy. Good stuff!

Thanks for the answers and the links. Some of the crazy quilts on the sites are amazing! I've done some patchwork quilting and love embroidery, but I never thought of putting the two together like this. :)
I'm going to pass on the swap and practice a little, but I'd love to see another swap like this in the future.
