Fabric ATC #1

Is the fusible batting like fusible interfacing? And is it really required? I'm awful at using interfacing, which makes me dislike it.

Yes, some kind of batting is required as it stablizes it and gives it dimension. I just reference one sided fusible because it is easier for most folks to deal with. It is not hard to use the fusible batting. You just cut a 2 1/2 X 3 1/2 piece and apply it to the wrong side of the fabric. This creates the basic fabric base for the ATC and then you add stitching and embelishments.

Last, you stitch the cardstock to the fabric around the edge of the card.

There are two types of ATCs a raw edged version where you just apply the one sided fusible to the fabric and then stitch it on the cardstock backing or the wrapped edge method. For the wrapped edge or folded under method you cut a 3 1/2 X 4 1/2 inch piece of fabric, isolate and center your design if there is one. Place the fusible batting in the centre of the 3 1/2 X 4 1/2 inch piece of fabric and iron it to stick to the fabric, rub glue stick around the edges of the fusible batting, fold the edges over to sick to the glue, let stand to dry a bit and then stitch on the cardstock back with a zig-zag, blanket or other decorative stitches that give a finished look to your edges.

Is the cardstock backing required or just a suggestion? I usually use plain fabric fused to stiff interfacing.

Go for it Jenny and anyone else who wishes to use a fabric backing format! A cardstock backing is preferable, but it should not be required for those who like to use a thick stiff fusible, fabric backing and write clearly with a permanent fabric marker.

I usually use several layers of thin fusible on the back. :)

Well, I've never even seen 'fusible batting' here anywhere, so I guess I'll sit this one out.

You can also use non-fusible, you just have to pin it and sew it down.

I just position the batting where I want it to go and put a drop of glue on all four corners... it is very easy. I use peltex as the backing to make it stiff. (I do most embellishing on just the fabric and batting before I put the peltex on. I also use another piece of fabric on the back of the peltex with all the info on....
