Description:

If you love to throw parties, you're probably always looking for cute ways to jazz up your table. For this project, I thought it'd be fun to make cupcake toppers specifically for your partner...and of course, you'll receive a fun set of toppers in return!

You will create one set of flat cupcake toppers (not 3D so we can keep our postage down by mailing in a regular envelope) with one dozen toppers. These are profile-based cupcake toppers, so have a look through your partner's bio and see what kinds of things he or she might enjoy. The toppers can be of your own original design or from any of the free downloadable templates floating out there, just as long as it's something nice you've chosen specifically based on your partner's likes and dislikes.

This should be a quick and inexpensive craft using materials you probably have around your home. If you need help on making toppers, check out the easy tutorial over at Instructables. Don't be lazy (!) and use the owl topper pictured above, but if you want them for yourself, it's free to download over at the rock scissor paper blog.

Additional info: Here is a better tutorial in case you'd like more photos.

All the usual disclaimers: Please do not join if you don't plan on following through. If you are delayed for any reason, make sure to clearly communicate with your partner and with me. This swap is open to everyone with a well-rounded profile, but those who seem risky will be deleted. And please--remember to rate your partner promptly when you get your package of goodies.

Have fun!

Fab Idea! I never even knew these existed! Fun!

thehappyhoneybee 08/12/2010 #

@SamitySam you will never have a naked cupcake again! ;)

Karenmomofthree 08/12/2010 #

I never knew this could be done I LOVE IT! Thank you!

bluecrayons 08/12/2010 #

so were just making the thing you poke into the cupcake?

thehappyhoneybee 08/12/2010 #

@bluecrayons Yes! It's pretty much a toothpick with a decorative tag glued to the top, which is then inserted into a cupcake for decoration. If you search "cupcake topper" images on google, you'll find lots of pretty options and inspiration.

patumma 08/13/2010 #

If you really want to get fancy, there also are patterns out there on the web for what I think are called "cupcake wrappers". They're basically decorated, curved strips of paper or cardstock which are wrapped around cupcakes, and they usually match the theme of the cupcake toppers if any are used.

And don't forget that you can buy multicolored packs of toothpicks, at least in the USA. Or you could use as your sticks shortened twizzle sticks (the really thin plastic straws used to stir coffee, hot tea, and hot chocolate.)

thehappyhoneybee 08/13/2010 #

Thanks @CraftyTweetie those are all great ideas. (The wrappers are a nice extra if you want to try your hand at some, although they are not required for the swap. They should also be shipped flat so that they arrive with not too many folds.)

The sky's the limit on this project...but don't feel overwhelmed. Sometimes the simplest designs are the prettiest, although you can certainly let your creativity loose if you wish!

Just remember they're meant to go on edibles, though, so it's best to stay away from glitter or anything that might flake/fall off too easily. I've also seen people put that they use non-toxic glue, but I kinda feel that this isn't really an issue. Unless you're chewing on your cupcake topper.

dollar tree has really GOOD party picks for this...as for adhesive, plain old Elmer's (use sparingly) or even tape works fine. i have a tutorial on my blog for these....here it is:

just copy and paste and it will take you to it.

clebeans 08/17/2010 #

I found this ad on the facebook swapbot blog and couldn't resist taking a look. This sounds really awesome. I didn't know you could do this. I don't usually make cupcakes as muffins is more my style but they can be used for that too as you can ice muffins to look really cute for special occasions.

thehappyhoneybee 08/17/2010 #

@clebeans Absolutely! They can be used for muffins and tiny pies and all sorts of other things, too. Imagine how cute they would be on top of a single triangle of cake on a plate.

thehappyhoneybee 08/20/2010 #

Hi everyone--I just sent a note inviting you to email me photos of your completed toppers when you're done, since I'd like to include them in a future blog gallery.

This is entirely optional, however, and not a requirement for the swap. Thanks!
