Description:

I have always thought Victorian Cab cards were so interesting and unique but also morbid at the same time.

For this swap, you will create 2 cab cards for 2 partner ( meaning 1 card each). This does not mean just get the picture and send that. You have to put it on a sturdy backing and decorate it, make it look nice and elegant. Think lace, beads, etc.

You can find these picture on ebay or thru yahoo image search. Do not feel that you must BUY a picture from Ebay to decorate! You can print it out and adhere it to cardstock, you can send the picture to a photo printing site, snapfish, walmart.com, etc.

This will be international.

You will have 2 partners.. You will send 1 card to each partner.

If you do not know what cab cards are...In the late 1800's and early 1900's, when a loved one passed away, it was usually the only time their picture would be taken. So the family would pose their deceased as if they were still alive. Babies, children, adults, sometimes even pets. They would dress them, prop them up, even site with them as if it were a family photo and have their picture taken together. Some are so life like it is hard to tell the subject is deceased. And some...well, it is pretty obvious.

PS: Can anyone tell me why I have the "last day to sign up" day as I do? If you get it right, you might get a cookie!

um is it because of Alice in Wonderland being published in 1865?

CajunLady 10/ 8/2010 #

where is the best place to get these cards? I'm constantly checking my antique malls, but I guess it's too morbid for them!!

CajunLady 10/ 8/2010 #

ok one more question...does it have to be an image of a dead person? Because I've found some and they are expensive? Or can we make our own from images we've found in the internet?

FiWebster 10/ 8/2010 #

Why are they called "cab" cards? =curious=

CajunLady 10/ 9/2010 #

if I'm not mistaken, cab is short for cabinet card.

ElizabethObviously 10/ 9/2010 #

Yes you can get them from the internet. What I usually go is save a picture I might like from ebay and send that puppy to walmart.com.

I am pretty sure they are dead people....though when I hve been looking it does not seem most are. But that always my impression of them.

And yes...cab is short for cabinet. Not sure why cabinet. I would think it would make more sense for them to be called Cad Cards...for cadaver

The last day is Nov 1 because that's the Day of the Dead. :)

ElizabethObviously 10/ 9/2010 #

It is actually called All Saints Day, because it is the day after Halloween which is All Souls Day.

CajunLady 10/ 9/2010 #

aw I didn't see that it was the last day to sign up!! I saw it as the last day to send!!

I didn't think about the Wal-mart thing!! ok whew!! I'm going to join then!!!

Lishmo 10/ 9/2010 #

Cabinet cards aren't always of dead people, but yeah, they usually look dead! Memento Mori, isn't that the term for the photos of the dead? I can't remember.

Awesome touch, Elizabeth, with the Day of the Dead connection. :)

ElizabethObviously 10/ 9/2010 #

Ahhh that's right Lishmo. I know that Memento Mori and Cab Cards are very similar but I always thought cab cards were dead people. But I think you are correct actually.

The name "Cabinet Cards" is just a style of photograph. It is a picture mounted on a card. I have two of them, one of my great-great grandmothers wedding and one of my great grandmother as a baby.

From my understanding(and this is from what my great grandmother told me) The photos of dead people were called "Mourning photos" during her time and are now called "Victorian Mourning photos" (I wish she were still alive because she knows all about this) Memento Mori is a style/genre of art which pre-dates the Victorian era.

MINImalist 10/11/2010 #

Just for clarification, is this swap for the "Cabinet Cards" of possible live people, or for the "Victorian Mourning Photo" of dead people? Thanks.

stitchinwitch 10/11/2010 #

'Memento Mori' means 'remember your mortality'. Lisa Vollrath has some images that work for this if you want to buy. I'll be watching

stitchinwitch 10/11/2010 #

Sorry to add I made one for a swap in another group and you can see it here

ElizabethObviously 10/11/2010 #

Yes, Minimalist, This is for the older, black and white type pictures of possibly dead people or people that are obviously dead, meaning in coffins like the one stitchinwitch posted. But also there are pictures where the people are dead put posed in life like situations.

ElizabethObviously 10/11/2010 #

The posed ones are the ones I was really meaning to be used for this swap.

MINImalist 10/12/2010 #

Thanks!

misscorbeau 10/15/2010 #

These are PC size, right?

ElizabethObviously 10/18/2010 #

They can be postcard sized yes. Depending on the size of the picture really. Some pictures do not come out very clear so they might have to be smaller. If the picture is smaller, just do more decoration.
