"Isms" in Children's Lit

This swap is a bit more serious than most in this group... It revolves around "isms" in childrens' literature, like racism, sexism, classism, etc.

Have you read any childhood books lately where racism suddenly jumps out and bites you? Some books that occur to me: Tintin au Congo, and other Tintin comics... in L.M. Montgomery's works the slightly shown racism towards the French and in one of her short stories, the pretty blatant racism against Native Americans... A professor of mine told me that Dr. Seuss also had something racist in it, but I haven't looked into this, so I'm not sure what book she is talking about.

So the swap- Write a letter to your partner talking about an "ism" (can be one I haven't specifically mentioned here) in a children's book. Describe the incident; how did it make you feel? Do you think that the work still has merit despite the "ism"? and anything else you might want to share. The letter doesn't have to be long, but at least one page.

Also, since this is kind of a serious swap, send something fun! It does not have to be related to the book you are writing about. It can be something small: a handmade envelope, a postcard, notecard, bookmark, a few stickers... etc.
