Hi, I'm Eve. Scientist, bookworm, and general nerd and crafter.
I work in biotech as a scientist, and have done some cool things throughout my time as a student to now, including using CRISPR Cas9 to make worms that glow (for confocal laser scanning microscopy to study neuron development), to researching cancer immunotherapies. Most recently, I was part of a team that that developed a COVID-19 vaccine using the old tech (antigen based, not mRNA) that is in phase 2 clinical trials currently!
All this has been neat for my career but I find that I don't enjoy the lab as much as I thought I did. I am working to stitch careers into program coordination/management for programs that support education- whether that's connecting students to supportive resources or being an educational support to students of various backgrounds. I have past experience as a tutor and academic coach to students with disabilities, and management experience of a homework support center, so I hope to make the swap soon! Education has helped me both by gaining knowledge, and skills to reason and apply my knowledge to improve my life, and I want to help other people get that same benefit. I think a lot of personal/financial/professional issues can at the very least be lessened if people can gain knowledge and reasoning skills to use that knowledge and navigate life's challenges. Even if it's reasoning out how to find supportive resources, or creative approaches to begin solving an issue. Therefore, I am planning ways to use my embroidery skills to create works to sell, and fundraise that way for nonprofits that promote educational services and supports. Even if I am not able to switch into a more education based career.
Outside work I enjoy my evenings with my 2 cats and husband, usually by embroidering, sewing, reading, practicing watercolor,
My favorite color is light blue, specifically teal/turquoise shades. After that very much like purple, red, and green.
I loooove love love cephalopods (octopus, squid, nautilus cuttlefish), and cats as well. All kinds, house, wild, doesn't matter.
I like to bake but don't do so often because my husband doesn't like sweets, and I don't want to eat them ALL by myself if I don't bring extras in to work or something (I have a huge sweet tooth). I do not want my morning workouts to be in vain!
My main craft is embroidery! I've been making my own patterns for a lot of the pieces I've completed. It's a lot of fun to put on a movie, show, podcast, or music, or just chat with whoever is in my company while I stitch away.
I also sew, not as often as I embroider. I'm also not as good at it as I am in embroidery, but the garments come out wearable so I'm happy.
Lately I have been practicing watercolors, and have found Daniel Smith watercolor paints, which are a dream to work with. It's difficult, but that just means I need to practice more.
