Swap Coordinator:user3740 (contact)
Swap categories: Challenges  Miscellaneous
Number of people in swap:51
Location:Other
Type:None
Last day to signup/drop:November 16, 2006
Date items must be sent by:February 28, 2007
Number of swap partners:1
Description:

This swap could be really cool or it could end up being a dud. I really want to try it though!

I'll start it by sending a disposable camera (or two or more depending on how many people sign up) to my partner, who will take a picture then send it to their partner, who will take a picture and send it to their partner and so on and so on until it/they get back to me. I will then get the pictures developed and post them on a blog so we can all see all the photos.

I will send an email out when the swap starts letting you know if there is any change to who you send to (in order to make sure I am first and last). I will also send a set of swap instructions with the camera(s).

You can take a picture of anything you want! Remember that it will end up on the internet for all eternity so think about that when selecting your subject.

Each person should take no more than two days to take a picture and mail the camera(s) on to their partner. Shipping will take a great deal of time so I have set the end date very far in advance, but we should all try to keep the camera(s) moving as fast as possible.

If the marathon stops (someone keeps the camera(s), they get lost, they get broken) it will be a dud and we won't see the pictures. However, I think this could be really neat if it works!

Swappers with a rating of lower than 4.0 will be banned. I hate to say that but it is really important that we keep the marathon going.

THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL SWAP! Please don't sign up if you are unwilling to send the camera(s) internationally.

user3942 10/16/2006 #

hey this sounds like a really interesting idea. =)

Dieuwertje 10/16/2006 #

What about X-raying mail? Is the photo than not gone?

user3740 10/16/2006 #

That is a good question. I've done a little looking around the Internet and it seems that excessive xraying of film through postal xray machines can cause it to become a little cloudy, and the higher the shutter speed (800 and higher) the bigger the problem. There is virtually no problem for slower speed film. It appears to be the same for both postal and airport xray machines.

I'm gonna chance it. The pictures won't disappear all together. I'll do my best to get disposable cameras that are 200 or 400 speed, disposable cameras are usually slower speeds anyway.

I will also have an option of sending a camera back to me once it is full. It is not necessary because I only expect people to send the camera(s) on to one person, but if someone along the way wants to send back a full one to cut down on shipping for the rest of the swappers they would be welcome to do so. It will all be in the instruction sheet accomanying the camera(s).

And yay... six swappers already (from three different countries)!

miantifaz 10/17/2006 #

BEEN DOING THIS FOR YEARS AND CURRETLY DOING ONE ON SWAPBOT ASWELL

user1950 10/17/2006 #

Can I make a suggestion, so that everyone knows where each picture is taken (country or city) and what it is a picture of; can there be a small log with the cameras to write down this info? That way when the pictures are posted a short description and photographer can be listed. Just a thought that passed through my mind today, when I signed up for the swap.

user3740 10/17/2006 #

Sure! There will be a log sent around with the camera(s) so people can write down info and also instructions on how to write me directly for those who wish to give their info privately.

I keep coming up with more ideas for this (though I may not get around to posting them here) and all of your suggestions are appreciated!

sweetxjosephine 10/23/2006 #

i just signed up for swap-bot (no ratings) but am very egar to be involved in this.

i'm reliable and wondering if there is any way i can join the swap...some way to prove my reliability... mrwar?

user3740 10/23/2006 #

Swappers with no ratings are welcome to participate.

cosmic 10/26/2006 #

COOL!!! I remember seeing something similar to this on the net and wish I could participate. And now I can :) Thanks for starting this swap. I'm already thinking of some trendy pics I can take in Australia.

user4462 10/27/2006 #

I have sighned up for this and think it is going to be a really neat idea, not sure though what I will take for a picture though. The only pictures I take as of lately are of my grandaughter and her little antics. I look forward to seeing the pictures that people take.

suttonjp 10/27/2006 #

I'm in for this one, too. However, I wonder how wise it is to ban people with a rating of 4 or below. I recieve only about 75% of my swap items, and most of those who don't send have ratings higher than 4. Because it is so important in this swap to make sure the camera gets sent along to the next person, you may want to consider banning anyone with any no-send ratings. Just my opinion.

user3740 10/30/2006 #

Ah, what to take a picture of... I will probably take a picture of one of the landmarks in my town. Or a detail of some cool facade on a building. Or maybe a newspaper of that day. Or maybe a busy walking street with lots of people on it.

I would try to avoid taking pictures of children because of the nutjobs out there looking for pictures of kids on the Internet.

suttonjp- I am going to let the shame of the public humiliation of being the one to stop the chain be the motivator for people keeping the cameras moving. Everyone will know where the chain ended (if it does) and I don't think anyone wants to be the the person that gets humilated. Thanks for the suggestion though!

user4188 11/ 2/2006 #

If you send out more than one camera, you might want to send them to different people, and start more than one chain. Then noone will have to pay postage for two cameras, and it will go a littrle faster. Just an idea...

user3740 11/ 5/2006 #

That's a good idea. Let me think on that. Thanks!

user4177 11/10/2006 #

I love traveling cameras! This will be neat!

user1185 11/11/2006 #

Another idea would be to hold a sign letting everyone know what city they are in.............

Also, since this is an international swap, could we keep the camera going in more of a direct trail? so that it would be cheaper on postage. Instead of coming back and forth from US to UK, UK to TX, TX to Austrailia, Aus to WI? You know what I mean?

What do you think?

Paula 11/11/2006 #

I'd like to participate, but I have one non-send rating. The woman is lying and I can't get her to either explain herself or correct the rating (she did receive her item). Before banning me, please look at all of my other ratings (5). Thank you.

bluecrayons 11/12/2006 #

i am very new no rating and would love to join this.

user3740 11/12/2006 #

No ratings yet and ratings of at least 4.0 are welcome so you are both okay!

Marysmadness- When I first envisioned this marathon I pictured the cameras zigzagging around the world. That would be easiest since people could send to the person they are assigned by swap-bot. Now that I think about it, it might be cool to have them go in one direction (east to west starting and ending with me here in Europe). I suppose could write down all the locations and put the addresses in order and notify the swappers (although gosh that seems like a ton of extra work). I wouldn't look up every state and country to find specific towns to keep it exactly east to west, but I could do each country and US state in order.

I'll think about that but I can't commit to it yet.

As of right now the swap is more than half US plus nine other countries (four continents)!

Dieuwertje 11/12/2006 #

Hi,

I think you must make a list with al the names and adresses. And then send the camera out to the firts one. When it arrieved she must sent you a email with the word camera arrieved and you sent that peron the next adress.

So you now where the camera is and now that everyone who joins gets the camera one time.

Maybe the joiners can sent there swap-bot swap-partner a realy nice postcard so there are no bad ratings after 2weeks.

Dieuwertje 11/12/2006 #

Sorry for my bad english

user3740 11/12/2006 #

Your English was fine. No worries. :)

After much thought, I have decided that we will do the swap the way it was originally written in the announcement. Frankly, it is stressing me out too much trying to make everyone's ideas work (and I can only anticipate more suggestions I'm sure) and then it is a whole lot of extra work once the swap starts to implement those ideas so we are going to do it the way it was originally intended. This was supposed to be fun but it doesn't feel so fun anymore, just work.

You will send the camera(s) to your swap partner assigned by Swap-Bot unless otherwise notified by me via E-mail. If you have a problem with the rules of the swap as they were originally written, it's probably best if you drop.

I hate sounding so harsh but really, anyone is open to start and maintain a swap any way they wish. I think that it would be better for those that have a problem with this swap to start their own.

Let's try to keep this fun okay!

user4884 11/13/2006 #

hey:)

i think it's a great idea to keep it the original way... i mean, i understand people with money issues, but i think it's more interesting this way:)

user4177 11/14/2006 #

cp, I don't think you should worry either. I don't think anyone gave suggestions because they wanted to make it more difficult, I'm sure everyone had only the best intentions. I, too think sticking to the original way is great, and I hope you still have fun with it. Besides, we all signed up for the swap agreeing to your original description! You had a great idea for this swap, and it should be fun!

:)

cosmic 11/14/2006 #

I agree with requiscat 100%

Can't wait for the camera to come 'down under' to me in Australia :)

user3740 11/17/2006 #

Hooray!

With a grand total of 51 participants, we are ready to go! I have purchased the cameras and they will be going out this weekend... first stop Seattle!

Just a reminder, there will be an instruction sheet and a log going with the cameras (2). Try to keep those going with the cameras in order to help others along the way.

Unless you hear otherwise from me via E-mail, you are to send the cameras to the partner assigned to you by Swap-Bot. The only changes will be to the person who is supposed to send to me and the last person on the marathon so they can send the camera to me instead of their assigned partner. Chances are very good that you will not have to deviate from your assigned partner so if you don't hear from me don't worry.

Oh this is exciting!

-Barb

Hagit 11/18/2006 #

Hi Barb, I'm happy to participate, this sounds like FUN! I can't wait to see all the pictures! :) Hagit

user3740 11/29/2006 #

Hello all!

I've gotten a couple of E-mails from people who accidentally hit Sent and were wondering if that was okay. No worries. I can't change it and it will all be okay anyway.

The camera should be arriving at it's first location any time now. It really has some serious travelling to do so nobody should expect it very soon.

I'm very pleased that things are going smoothly.

:)

pootle 12/ 4/2006 #

Camera received, used and posted today (well I'm off to the post office now!) next stop requiscat!

bluecrayons 12/13/2006 #

do we get copies of these photos? or can we pay for a copy of them?

user4177 12/16/2006 #

The camera was recieved today from Pootle, and will be off to Peety on Monday!

user3740 12/18/2006 #

BC- The photos will be on the Internet and I won't be making copies.

Everyone, we are up to number four on the list of 51 participants. The camera has already crossed the Atlantic three times! Some of you won't be getting the camera for a very long time. I'm really glad things are going so smoothly (although in retrospect, maybe it wasn't such a good idea to get the swap started during the height of holiday shipping :)).

Paula 12/20/2006 #

Much to my surprise, the camera arrived in my mailbox today. I'll be sending it off to Dieuwertje in Germany tomorrow.

user4177 12/21/2006 #

Whoa! That made it through the post quickly!

Dieuwertje 12/28/2006 #

The postmen rings the doorbel this morning. I will make a picture today and send the camera to the next one.

Greetings, Dieuwertje

Dieuwertje 12/28/2006 #

I send the Camera a 1/2 hour ago out off the Netherlands with priority. I hope it arreived soon in the USA

WomenTrip 01/ 6/2007 #

i am here and waiting for the camera ...

princessfiona 01/ 7/2007 #

hi i just noticed that it says in the swap feedback of 4 or less will be droped and there is a person on the list that has a really low rating of 2 and has a bad rating i dont want to spoil this for anyone but is it a good idea to send the cameras to this person? i am consrened that they will get lost as she seems to be having problems sending at the moment

fiona

toscabelle 01/ 8/2007 #

I have to agree with Fiona. She has been on quite a few of the same swaps as me...not burnt me yet, but has disappointed a lot of other wonderful swappers. I'd hate for this great project to fail because of her.

Happy new year to all! Hurry up and send me that camera soon ;)

user3740 01/ 9/2007 #

I'll look in to it. She didn't have that low of a rating when this swap started.

amorecards- You will have to wait a bit more. :) If my estimation of where the camera is is correct, there are still five people in front of you.

To everyone, the camera has only traveled about one tenth of it's journey. Considering we are almost two months into this swap, I'd say this is going to take longer than we all expected. That's fine though... no worries here.

Stay tuned...

WomenTrip 01/14/2007 #

ok thanks i will wait

Ninety 01/17/2007 #

So far, the camera has been with just ten people... I can't wait! I hope it comes faster than the deadline... Please let me know when it is, so I'll be prepared!

user1950 01/19/2007 #

I just received the camera today in Washington State from Iowa. We are in a cold spell here with snow and ice, kids have not been to school since last Friday, so I will get the camera out into the mail on Monday or Tuesday. I can't wait to see the pictures that are on these cameras. It will be interesting to see what is being described in the notebook. This is so cool!!!

user1950 02/ 1/2007 #

The camera is on the move again. Sorry for the delay, busy, cold, icy and illness. Excuses Excuses. But it is on to a new home. Have fun.

user1950 02/ 6/2007 #

Melissa aka belle, the camera is coming your way sometime this week I hope. Be on the lookout for it.

Ninety 02/ 6/2007 #

Hey! I check EVERYDAY for the camera, and still NOTHING. I hope the camera arrives before I take a plane for a business trip. Please let me know when you sent it to me.

user1950 02/ 8/2007 #

I sent the camera off Monday to Melissa in MA. I don't know who is sending to you or when Ninety. You may want to contact CPFAVES to find out how far down the list you are. I think she is the only one with access to the whole mailing list. HTH

user3740 02/ 8/2007 #

Ninety-

Stop checking your mail everyday. It's gonna be a while. :)

Melissa in MA is number 9 on the list. You are number 29.

So, if things keep moving at the same speed, you should be getting the camera in (gulp) six months (and you are at about the half-way point!).

I really thought this would move faster. I thought we would be a lot farther along... definately more than 9.

I'm not blaming anyone or angry at all. It's totally cool with me so no worries.

I'm considering posting the swappers names in the order that they get the camera so people won't be expecting it way before it comes to them. Or would that ruin the surprise... hmm. What do you all think?

CP

user960 02/ 8/2007 #

Yeah, that would be cool. I was just going to suggest that, actually. ;)

Ninety 02/ 9/2007 #

Hahahaha, I was so worry about getting the camera before my trip, that I was planning of take a picture and send it to cpfaves, and reveal my ID to may partner - just in case-... Knowing that I'm in the middle of the list gives me a relief... But now, I'm thinking if cpfaves authorizes (or send) another camera, to the middle list, so it can move quicker...

Zanara 02/13/2007 #

I like that idea! I have a perfect rating and since it doesn't look like the camera will get to me before the end date what would be the apropriate thing to do?

toscabelle 02/15/2007 #

Who has the camera now? It has been a while since we've had an update.

user1950 02/17/2007 #

It should be with Melissa in MA. I sent it off on the 8th of February, so she should have it by now. Hopefully she will give an update soon. I am the culprit that had it longer than normal, guilty - guilty(Weather issues and health). But it should be back on track at a better speed. There should be some great shots on the camera for everyone to enjoy at the end. I think for it to make it through all the people on the list, there should be 3 or 4 cameras out there for people to take pics. At this rate I am afraid that people will lose interest, forget about the swap, or even move during the progression of the camera. Well that is up to cpfaves if she wants to send out other cameras to random people throughout the list. Sometimes things come up and people get delayed in sending the camera and I know it gets people flustered.

Well just my thoughts.

analog 02/26/2007 #

Maybe we should send a second camera to the bottom of the list and work the way up...

once the swap is over- and i still havent send the item- will it mess up my rating?!

Ninety 02/28/2007 #

Ok, I contacted cpfaves today to suggest that I was going to take another camera and pass it down, so it could be less frustating to still waiting for the first one to come, and so we can check the "sent" link. I haven't had any response yet, so what do you think? Today 02/28/07!!!

user1950 02/28/2007 #

I have left a message for Belle to please post about the camera, but no response yet. I know she has it, had delivery confirmation. But it is out of my hands. Sorry that it has just ended there. Hopefully we will hear from her soon or if she passed it on, then that person can please post a note. Thanks.

dulcimer 03/ 1/2007 #

I received notification from swap bot that i am late in sending. What is this going to do to our ratings and will i continuously receive emails telling me this over & over & over.........

Ninety 03/ 1/2007 #

Again, I'm offering to continue the swap with another camera, and maybe if cpfaves splitted even more we could have at least 3 cameras moving... I also contacted my partner and she agreed, but we are missing the instructions that cpfaves had planned with the slow camera. Cpfaves, we are waiting for your input, thanks.

bluecrayons 03/ 1/2007 #

im patiently waiting too. i suggest getting 1 or 2 more going.

belle184 03/ 2/2007 #

The camera left Boston today! Woo Hoo!!! I was pretty excited when I got it!

CarriePie 03/ 2/2007 #

I'm getting those annoying messages that it's past the deadline...=( Can a deadline be extended after the swap deadline passes? What is the status on cameras being sent to the middle of this list??? Thanks!

CarriePie 03/ 2/2007 #

I'm getting those annoying messages that it's past the deadline...=( Can a deadline be extended after the swap deadline passes? What is the status on cameras being sent to the middle of this list??? Thanks!

Annette 03/ 2/2007 #

I haven't gotten the camera yet, I figure I must be down on the list--I'm going to post "sent" even so--so I don't get the email reminders every day. Looking forward to getting the camera and sending it off again!

riario 03/ 2/2007 #

I haven't gotten it yet either but I'm also changing to "sent" to avoid email reminders.

junio 03/ 2/2007 #

I'm also going to change to "Sent" to avoid the reminders. The Sent/Not Sent stats won't be accurate, but since the two things that really matter are a) the camera going around and the photos being cool; and b) swap participants being happy, I figure that's OK.

I just wish I knew where I was on the list, but I guess this means the surprise will be all the greater!

LaDolceVita 03/ 3/2007 #

I'm also going to click "sent" even though I haven't received the camera yet. I was also thinking... we're going to HAVE to start another camera because if there's 51 people in the swap and the average disposible camera only holds 27 pictures.. by the time it gets to the 28th person the camera will be done and out of film. That's just about the middle of the list, too.. so I think the 28th person should start a new camera now and get the bottom of the list done quicker.

hanjiwest 03/ 3/2007 #

I just clicked sent as well to avoid the daily message. I hope the camera comes soon but whenever it arrives is fine with me. What fun!!!

dulcimer 03/ 3/2007 #

ditto me too

AuntNub 03/ 4/2007 #

Me too...I'm clicking sent also, although I haven't even received the camera yet, so as to avoid the dail message. What's the latest as to where it is? I'm looking forward to taking a picture & seeing what others have done!

Ninety 03/ 4/2007 #

Another sent on the list. We're waiting for cpfaves response about a new cameras going around.

user4884 03/10/2007 #

me too, the "sent" thingy...

princessfiona 03/31/2007 #

how is this going any news on the cameras whereabouts?? fionaxx

Annette 04/ 5/2007 #

I've got an idea of where I want to take a picture--so when it arrives I won't hang on to it more than two days.

Maybe people can try to do that--so we can keep it on the move and lessen any possible frustration--unless someone is out-of-town or something? Does it seem feasible?

pootle 04/ 6/2007 #

There are a few less-then-perfect ratings in the list now - has the camera stopped or have the drop-outs been bypassed? What a shame if this hasn't worked - such a cool idea.

dulcimer 04/ 8/2007 #

its been so long i almost forgot about it or what im taking a picture of.

WomenTrip 04/15/2007 #

hi

i didn't get any news from this swap up to know even the camera any info

analog 05/ 8/2007 #

is this thing still going?

i havent heard from anyone, or received anything...

did the camera atleast get developed?

bluecrayons 05/17/2007 #

hmmm.i to am wondering about this camera. any updates?

princesskate 08/12/2007 #

I am finally going to mark my account as sent as it appears the camera will never make it around to me, and I want to clear it off my current swap list.

I am still watching the mail to see if it will appear!

princessfiona 10/19/2007 #

any news??? sham this one never happened it looked soo good :( never mind fx

bluecrayons 03/11/2008 #

wow this is something else. here it is 3-11-08 and i still havent seen the camera and the host seemed to of disappear too.

Erin 04/ 2/2008 #

Please, if the camera ever shows up again, keep it moving along :) :) :) I'm not giving up hope, I would still love to get it and participate. But I am going to mark it as "Sent" to clear it off my open swaps :(
