Description:

Making a journal jar is a creative way to encourage someone to start slowly keeping a journal. Whether you're a person who already likes to journal, you're not really interested, or you find it too time consuming, a journal jar lets you attempt to journal in small doses. I know I have good intentions and would love to journal every day just so I can remember something about these days that go by so fast. The days all blend into one and before you know it, all the memories are just one big blur.

The idea behind a journaling jar is that you take out one prompt a day, glue it to your journal page and write a response to that prompt. Here's how it's done:

First you find a jar (any size will work). You can keep it plain, putting a label on the outside that says, "Journal Jar" or you can decorate it with patterned paper, fabric or anything else you want.

Pick 100 journaling prompts

Type them and print them out on cute fonts on paper and cut them into strips with decorative scissors. (You can also use regular scissors, but the decorative are prettier.) OR You could also write the prompts yourself with different colored markers or a black pen.

Then fold them up and put them into the decorated jar.

PART TWO OF THIS SWAP WILL BE TO TAKE THE PROMPTS YOU RECEIVED AND CREATE A JOURNAL. I WILL POST A SECOND SWAP WITH MORE INFO FOR THIS. YOU CAN EITHER JOIN THE FIRST SWAP ONLY OR BOTH SWAPS. UNLESS PEOPLE THINK THAT YOU SHOULD SEND THE JOURNAL BACK TO THE PERSON WHO SENT YOU THE PROMPTS....I'LL KEEP IT LIKE THIS. IF NOT, I'LL CHANGE IT!

This is awesome! Do we have to use a jar? I'm just thinking that a jar will be heavy/expensive for shipping. Can we use other things for a container? Sorry to be a bug.

melzenitram 07/21/2010 #

it doesn't have to be a heavy jar...think lightweight plastic like a peanut butter jar or something along those lines. i know craft stores carry all sorts of light weight jars! the entire swap IS based on a JAR though...lol

LesleyKnitsPretty 07/21/2010 #

That makes sense. It's just really expensive to send packages internationally from Canada. Thanks!

melzenitram 07/21/2010 #

i know..from USA too...

Thank you for international version!

May I have to send the journal back to the person who sent prompts to me? I would like to have my journal! Thank you!

i think it is going to have to be a second option swap..if not there will be no way to rate

Mailing a jar even a plastic one is going to cost a bit in postage from the UK to USA or Canada :(

Just in case anyone from the UK is watching this - I found a great plastic jar in Poundland today that is ideal for this. It's not too big, really light (great for posting) and is clear so would be ideal to decorate. It has a clip lid rather than a screw top but it is still definately a jar. Just in case anyone was struggling to find something. Most jars in the UK tend to be glass - I got a few odd looks in the supermarket testing to see if things were glass or plastic :-s

Anyone have any ideas of what things to write as journaling prompts?? I'm thinking quotes mostly, but I guess you could include things like: "Today I will try to..."? LOVING the idea of this swap.

Kittyfuzz 08/11/2010 #

@TheLittlePixieTailor I was wondering about this but I have found a ton on the web including this site that has 728 prompts http://pyxlin-journal-prompts.wikidot.com/

google is your oyster methinks :-)

@Kittyfuzz Awesome. I did do a little Googling and found some interesting sites, so roll on partner assignation!
